Default Frederick Reynolds Celebrated hollow ground FBU

Pretty excited about my wild caught FBU I got today! I'ts a big 'un at 9/8s at the widest point! Should clean up with just a little effort. Do you think it had more of a smile originally? Seems to match the spine curve pretty close though. The box says Gell street which would mean it was made by his son (if it's the original box) but still before 1891 as the stamp has no country of origin.

What year did they start doing hollow grinds?

Antique shop? Hope you were able to get it without paying an obscene price. Interesting notch. The edge looks like it goes out further than the spine. I don't shave with any of my big blades (they need work or honing), but I love the look of the big choppers.
How is the other scale? Going to rescale or keep it original?

I would say i got a good deal on it. I asked the store owner if she could do any better on the price and she said "how about $30? "Sounds good" i said. the scales have no bug holes or chips so i plan on re dying them and polishing things up a bit. Nothing over the top but enough to let some of the age show through.

$30 nice find. The address would be Gell Street, which is off West Street in Sheffield

I really like the old well used and well loved scales. If it were mine I would just hydrate and wax those scales. It is an impressive razor, fantastic find.

You paid 30 bucks for that?! Where's a cop, because you stole it-awesome find! That is one sexy beast of a blade.

Reminds me of the time a few years ago when I got a handful of big Sheffield choppers in great condition at 5 for a hundred when a huge knife superstore a couple of states away had dozens of razors in a display case from an estate sale-I don't think they knew what they had! Deals like that are rare indeed nowadays.

That would be the premier razor in most of our collections-Enjoy!!

Oh yes your right about it being Gell street (correction made). Have you been there? Are any of those old buildings still standing? It would be awesome to see.

    Awesome razor Vern! But...

Posting the criminal act of larceny in a public place....$30.00??? Wow!

Looking forward to seeing the progress on such an awesome piece.
    Congratulations and enjoy.

That sounds like a good idea. I still regret destroying a good set of FBU scales. Never tried oiling or waxing old horn scales.
