New to me razor arrived today
I purchased this razor from Midoio, here on SRP. His price for the razor couldn't be ignored, even though I wasn't actively looking for another one. It is nicer in person than in pictures. I am anxious to get it honed and try it out.

Thanked: 3215Nice, reshape that heel.
You can see where honing on the stabilizer and the tang has kept the heel off the stone, and probably added to the toe wear on the spine, extra pressure trying to force the razor on the stone.
Reshaping will move the heel corner well forward of the stabilizer and make it easier to hone.

OK, here is where my lack of SRs become apparent. The heel is the portion just before the pivot pin, correct? I have my grandfather's stone that he used in the butcher shop, and one side might be 1k, but I can't be certain. If it is close, would it work for reshaping the heel?

Thanked: 3215Depends on the stone, post a pic and possibly it can be ID’d.
A 1k would do it.
Here is a post outlining how to correct a heel. The heel is where the red circle is, just use a coin or washer to draw a curve that will move the corner where the straight edge ends ahead of the stabilizer.

Thanked: 110Pretty certain a large percentage of the members here have or have had that same Soligen made by many makers.... And they are great shavers!! Easy to maintain, great to learn on whether that is shaving or honing, hold an edge well, almost an essential razor in any collection.. I have a couple that are always in rotation... Nice pick up and enjoy!

Thanked: 3215That looks like a Norton Crystolon (Silicon Carbide) dual grit stone. The Coarse Crystolon is 120 grit, and the Fine Crystolon is 320 grit, much too aggressive for honing a razor.
They are great stones for tools and knives, but not razors. You can, with care use the 320 side to re-shape the heel but, honing should be done with a 1,000 grit stone. You can buy a new 1k king for $20 and will work just fine. That, a 3-5k and 8-12k are all you need to hone and maintain your razors forever.Last edited by Euclid440; 03-08-2019 at 01:12 AM.

Thanked: 3215With film a 1k stone will make setting the bevel much easier. Then jump to 5um film, refine on 3um and finish on 1um.
You can set a bevel on 12um or even 5um if the bevel is in goo shape, but a 1k is faster and easier.
