double DE score
Havent been on here as much as Id like, been busy with work and now major renovations. Unfortunately due to renos I cant really access my straights easily and so have been using DEs mostly for last 2 months. Renos should end before September, fingers crossed.
I have been lucky with antique stores though. The one I usually visit every 2 months or so had this Slim in the case with blades and instructions. Guy let me have it for 10$, he's an old feller who always sees me come in and either says no new razors or rummages around and finds them for me. The gold fat boy I found at an antique store that just opened up near me. The platig is in excellent shape with only some pitting on the handle. Teh little spots you see in the pics. They also had 5 straights 3 were cracked one was a king cutter with crappy scales and another was unknown to me but they were marketing it with bamboo scales. (actually plastic made to look like bamboo) it was 45$ but as my stones are even harder to get at than my straights (involving moving of much furniture t get at the closet they are in) I wont even consider them til renos are done.
I havent tried either DE yet, need to clean them up but I am eager to try the gold fat boy as I have never used one before and it really does look great.

Thanked: 3215Soak in hot water with a shot of dish soap overnight. Do not use any polish on the gold or any abrasives, it will take the gold right off.
The pitting is not good sign, could mean soap is caked inside the handle and it is corroding from the inside. A good overnight soak will tell you by how much crud it loosens up. Scrub with a soft toothbrush and dish soap. You may have to soak for a few days if the handle is full of soap.
The nickel Slim you can use scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush on, the nickel is tougher use only dish soap on the gold Fat Boy.
You can take them apart, there are good videos on-line, you will have to make some tool to prevent damaging the razors.
The best way to clean, is to disassemble and clean in dish soap and ultrasonic cleaner.
Rubbing alcohol and a microfiber will brighten the gold, and the nickel as well. They can be re-plated for about $80-90, or you can use them as is.

Thanked: 3215It can take more than a single over night soak to loosen years of hardened can soap from inside the handle of the Executive. Ultrasound is the best way to clean even if you do not disassemble.
Some canned soaps were very sticky and attached to the inside of the handle if not rinsed thoroughly and held moisture that ate the handle from the inside out.
So, you might soak if for a few days, you can still shave with it and see if any soap is released. Check the water for clouding, an indication that soap is releasing. Some folks advocate boiling in soapy water, but I use ultrasound and hot water and Dawn Platinum dish soap, (a high Enzyme soap) instead. My ultrasound does have a heating element that gets or keeps solution warm.
It can take several days even with ultrasound. The trick is not to damage the thin gold plating, so long soaking in hot soapy water is the safest.
The slim, most folks think is a better shaver than the 195 “Fat Boy”, blade selection can make a big difference.
If you start using the Gold Executive again you can cause the soap in the handle to again retain moisture and reactivate the corrosion. The Gold Executives were fairly rare and marketed during the Holidays for gift purchase.
Nice case on the slim, nice cases can be more difficult to find than razors.

Thanks seems like great advice, Ill try soaking it some more and see if there is any change.
I dont have access to an ultrasound cleaner so that's out. What are your thoughts on using the dishwasher without any soap?
The first shave went great used setting 3 and didn't feel any need or desire to move it up or down, will probably try 4 next time

Thanked: 3215I have heard of guys doing that, but don’t know how effective it would be to get into the handle and loosen the hardened soap. Soap that has been in the handle for 20-30 years can be very hard to remove, even after disassembly it can take some time.
I doubt it would hurt anything, don’t know if it would do any good.
