Lacking skills and material, I'm not going to restore it myself. And for me these large blades, sumptuous though they look, would probably not make for an enjoyable shave. I'm more a 4/8'' kind of guy.
But reading your favourable reactions I think I can confidently give it to someone who values it.
The thing is, I behaved like an oaf in an admirable give-away by Gratewhitehuntr recently. Feelings were needlessly hurt and apart from apologies to Gratewhitehuntr and The0ctopus some kind of quittance is in order. Xman challenged us to host our own give-away, which is an excellent idea.
Now I'm thinking what would be best. I could give it away myself as it is now. In that case, I'll think of a nice contest question. Alternatively, I could donate it to a willing restauration buff who could polish it up before giving it away or passing it on to one of the SRP contests/give-aways.
What do you think?

A giveaway is an excellent idea; but as I understand it, the administration are the only ones who are supposed to do giveaways. Perhaps ask them for their advice? I'm sure they'll be glad to help you move it on to someone.
I personally would love to have a chance at it...very nice lines on that one...

That is a real eye catcher! It has a "No Prisoners!" attitude toward whiskers. My F. Herders have been excellent shavers, and yours looks like it will remove a full beard with a few swipes, once cleaned up and honed.
Congratulations.

Well for the last couple of days I have been having long conversations with this Herder.
We have decided that it will be sheathed in burgundy Linen Micarta. I am keeping the original lead spacer.
Nerf, that is what I have named it. Is up to 100 grit. I have been using oil and sandpaper to work a little faster. Not to get it done but because there is so much damage. It is actually coming clean. I do not want to post pics yet cause Nerf is still a little sensitive about his appearance.
I have found a great use for my 9.6v cordless drill. I put a 60 grit dremel sanding drum in the chuck and sent it for a slow spin to remove some of the pitting. No go. I reduced it slightly but the placement of the pits precludes me from digging. The pit by the 22 will stay as I do not want to lose the information. I am trying to reduce the other pits on the shank. The hinge area was just toast. It had so much gunk on it. It is gone now the gunk not the hinge.
BTW if anyone gets the Nerf reference they get a cookie.

I have ordered Linen Micarta in Burgundy and Paper Micarta in Ivory.
They should be here by Saturday.
I hope to have the razor finished by Monday. No promises though. I have a busy 4 days ahead of me.

Your Herder deserves the best in restoration. It is a really wonderful razor under the patina and grime. Congratulations!
