Antique Shop Swaty and Razor
I managed to swipe these two for $5 total. Not a bad deal?
The razor is in a Joseph and Sons Sheffield box, but the tang reads "Schneider & Chapman Solingen" other side "Made in Germany" Looks dirty but nothing a little Maas can't improve upon.
The Swaty is what it is, a Franz Swaty, Marburo Austria. I know next to nothing about these. Any clues? Do I lap it the way I would my Chinese 12k?

Swaty's are great. I don't know what grit (I don't think anyone knows for sure), but they are very fine and make great finishers. Fun fact - you can tell they are real high grit because they are reflective (you might need to look at an angle if you've just lapped one, but if it's a bit used they get reflective straight on).

Thanked: 3795Your Swaty is what's known as a two line Swaty, because it has two lines of text, as opposed to a three line Swaty. Your new Swaty will definitely need to be lapped before use as it is quite rough in it's current state. Once it's lapped, you will have yourself a great hone!
The razor looks like it will clean up, and hone up, just fine.
Nice score!

Great find and you saved yourself a good chunck of change you can throw at more gear! Love hearing about the antique store/flea market finds.

I couldn't find any Maas, so I went with Mothers, some elbow grease, and a dremel. However, I broke the scales by accident. They were fragile anyway. Then I used the emery attachment on the tougher bits of rust, they came off quite easily. I thought I'd take it to blade area and woops! left some scratches. Oh well. It was a learning experience.
I had good intentions with this razor, but now I need some help. Since I got it for practically nothing, I was going to clean it, hone it, and give it away to a newbie in the classifieds, just charge shipping. But now that the scales are gone, I'm stuck. If anyone has the time, patience, and resources to rescale this and pass it on to someone for free, please email me.

Wait, you're saying you cracked some old bakelite scales? Usually the ones I break seem to do so when I just look at them funny. Don't feel bad, they're ridiculously brittle in such a maddening way.
$5 for the pair? Good deal. Finds like that are the reason that I STILL pull out a small bill and buy barber hones even though I don't really use them and therefore have too many already. Who can resist when the deals are good?
