Antique Store Escher Surprise Today!
I stopped by my favorite Tucson antique store today in the hopes of finding a new razor...I did, but the lady at the desk asked me if I would also be interested in a nice stone for sharpening razors. You bet! I was not expecting the boxed Escher she showed me, but when I saw it, I knew that my day had finally come! It is without cracks or chips, is in the orignal box, and has most of the original label on it. It is 5 inches long, 2 1/2 inches wide, and 3/4 inches in depth. It made me feel slightly dizzy with joy, as I have always wanted one. The last 4 times I visited this shop, they had nothing new. You just never know when fortune will smile!

Nice!!
I've gone into several antique stores and they usually have nothing. I have dreamed of the day where I walk in and they have something spectacular like a perfectly intact and labelled Escher. Congrats! I'm glad the day has finally come to you.

Beautiful stone. I bet it will be as good for honing razors as it looks.

This Escher still had a powdery coating of slurry on it when I took it out of the box. Seemed flat, so I honed 3 razors on it. Had to stop when the label got wet and started to peel! I think that I am going to soak it off and preserve it in a large stamp envelope in the box it came in. Then, lap both sides of that bad boy. I could not believe how smooth and sharp an edge I got on those 3 razors, which were all close to shave ready. Looking forward to my shave tomorrow, Bob's your Uncle!

On an Escher the same size, shape & box I had the label come off and I put it away. On some Eschers you'll find that the surface under the label side is very irregular. Sort of rough hewn. I've got more than one like that.
That is the way the stone I'm talking about is so I only lapped the one side. Yours may be different and lend itself to flattening but I would still leave the label side as is even with the label set aside. Obviously YMMV.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Jimmy, you are right. I carefully felt the label side, and it has some roughness and grooves in it, like yours. I don't feel like ruining a DMT on it, or the hours of lapping it would take to get them out. Hey, you can only hone on one side at a time, so one useable one is good enough for me! Thank you.

Very nice. I would bet you got a great deal on it as well. The most I've paid at an antique shop for any of the vintage hones I have is a 10th of what I think it's worth. All the others I've paid much less.
You also know you're a HADdict when you come across something like that and get MUCH more of a thrill than you would most any razor you find.
Enjoy!
I've got those same exact micro-fiber cloths BTW. They're great.

Congrats on a great find! I know the dizzy feeling very well. Isn't it GREAT! Welcome to the club! I was also very impressed with the edge off the Esher as were you. I could never have justified buying one off EBay for what they are going for.
