so what the heck did I buy here?
It was cheap. It actually looks better than the pictures show. Scales -- some sort of horn? But now that I have it, I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm soliciting opinions.
Don't get hung up on hanging hairs.

Thanked: 1371That sure looks like a vintage stub-tail to me. (even without seeing the tang)
I'm guessing it was made in the first half of the 19th century.
Very nice find!
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

Thanked: 13245Yep agreed, a very early 1800's Sheffield razor without even seeing the tail...
They tend to be a bit of a bear to hone up, because they take a very very gentle touch on the hones...
Would be great if you could preserve the scales and pins... the razor looks from the pics to have very little hone wear but it is hard to see...
Great snag

Definitely a great snag. That's some history right there. 150+ years old. Congrats

so.....
scales are warped but solid and those big old pins and washers are actually in pretty good shape, no intentions of changing them
so... worth the ten bucks I paid?Don't get hung up on hanging hairs.

A beautiful and very usable piece of history is what you got there! I would say it was made no later than 1830.

Nice snag. I have a very similar Greaves - same sort of mini-shoulder and beefy spine. Feels very interesting in the hand because the spine weight is a bit lower than normal and the blade isn't all that wide. Great shaver, though.

Very nice and sturdy old Sheffield razor! Those stout pins and collars will last into the next century. Lord and Harvey were in business during 1822, at Brightmore's Yard, Church St. Sheffield. Could not find the company history, maybe Manah can help. I found the reference here:
