    Default Antique shop find

So I was out running errands yesterday and came across an antique shop that I hadn't yet visited. I decided to stop in, thinking they probably wouldn't have much. I came across this clean 8/8 W&B For Barbers Use. It looks to be half to 3/4 hollow, horn scales, lead wedge, and a really nice blade. There's no pitting, almost no staining, and just a bit of light rust on the front side of the tail. The scales are faintly inscribed "Jacobs" with the number "908" on the back side. The blade is still sharp enough to pop arm hairs. I gave $75 for it, but I think it to be a fair price for such a nice razor. I thinking of shining it up with some Maas, honing it, and leaving it in vintage condition. I'm feeling pretty fortunate to have found such a cool razor in this condition. I thought all the good ones had already been snatch up!

    What a fantastic find!
I keep looking for an 8/8 W&B but non of the antique stores in my region have any straights worth getting!

    enjoy the shave

Thanks for the tip, Alan! I just had a run-in with my new Wellington. Earned myself a ice little gash for not paying attention to the point.

Any idea about the manufacture date of this W&B? I'm guessing pre-1880, but it'd be nice to get a little more specific.

    Cheers,

Nice find and looks like it will be an excellent, not just good, shaver. Is it 7/8 wide? Needs minimal cleanup, I agree. Some quality oil like neatsfoot and careful hand rubbing will do wonders to renew those scales.

I'm at work so I can't check you Robert Doyle book but IIRC he dated the meat choppers with Barber's Use beginning in 1850 and going 20 years or so. Nice piece you found there.

Nice score. I like the vintage look of this razor; the blade matches perfectly with those beautiful scales.

Thanks, Craoker. I laid it on a ruler and it looks to be exactly 8/8, maybe a smidge wider at the toe of the blade. I'll definitely give the scales some TLC with neatsfoot.
