    Default 1850's Chopper-George Wostenholm

Got this beauty from Bob Keyes-he continues to provide an outstanding selection of vintage straights. This razor is from the 1850's! The horn scales had a crack so he replaced them with new Buffalo Horn scales-and sent me the old ones. I love the idea of the original scales, but the new scales are so nice it presents a bit of a dilemma. For now I'll keep it as is, but I'll always be tempted to put the originals on. Bob thinks the original scales will be functional-what would you do?

That's a really nice razor. Bet you that takes off a weeks growth pretty easy!

Not to worry! I am partial to razors with that" big old wedge with tons of hone wear and a wide bevel look"! I think you should SHAVE with it!
As to the original scales, I believe they can be saved and used. Cracks at the bottom, YES! At the top, Notsomuch! I like it as it is, though! The use of this razor was obviously favorable for a very long time. It would be good to continue!

Do you still have the original lead wedge?

Original lead wedge? Don't understand question??
Oh I plan on shaving with it-most definitely. I think
I'll shave with it as is, and when it's time to hone it
I'll have the scales switched out. I don't think I can
hone a wedge with my primitive honing skills.

The wedge is the piece of material that separates the scales/handles at the butt end. If you still have that piece which is almost always lead, you can make the razor original again.

From the picture it looks to me like the lead wedge is still in place on the old scales.

    Nice score Danny.

I found my wedge easier to hone than the hollow gronds but that was just me and I have very limited razor honing experience.

Very nice. I'm partial to those as well.
I strop my razor with my eyes closed.
