Those are oak leaves on the spine. I think they used maple because it is easier to machine, but most of all, prettier. I'm no woodworker, or expert on it, but back in my younger days oak was what was used for hammer and other tool handles. Hard wood and very plain looking. That birdseye maple is a popular wood for gun stocks and the like. I've never seen an oak gun stock or guitar for that matter. Plenty of maple.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I have used Oak for razor scales, and yes it's an incredibly hard wood to work, but very beautiful when finished correctly, I also use Danish oil + some ren wax finish, as long as your wood is correctly seasoned I don't see there being a problem with water I never get my scales wet ever, these are a set I made using my native Welsh Holme Oak from a tree over 800 years old.

I love this razor for so many reasons. Congrats on the purchase, use it in good health!
i hopt to get my hands on one soon, but i haver a few i was looking to put my hands on first. I love this razor because to me it encompasses all the traditional aspects of an old sheffield blade in a new (limited) production model... And yes i know its a TI and its french, but it looks as though it has a sheffield 'feel' to it!
Again enjoy this razor, if you dont.... PM me......... Making Old Razors Shine N' Shave, Once Again.
