I agree. The lines are very simplistic, with little flair or styling whatsoever. Look at some of the first customs guys here do. Very plain with no embelishment, then as they get better, their style develops. It looks like a beginning one off to me. However, I am very jealous, as it's a freakin' COOL piece.

Thanked: 0I was really wondering about the case too. The razor fits absolutely perfectly inside it with the tang sticking out just enough. Weird!

Honestly, as someone else said, the case looks like an eyeglasses case to me. Kind of like, "oh crap, I just made this, now what do I do with it?" *searches frantically, spies mama's glasses case, dumps out the glasses and sighs. "Now that fits just perfect." *hides the razor until he dies so mama doesn't steal back her case.*
Or something like that........
My heart rate would have been skyrocketing too! Can we ask what you had to end up giving for it, or is that a breech of conduct?

Hey folks
Can we please refrain from sales talk in the open forum as I've just deleted a couple of posts.
Sales talk can be via PM and the Classifieds but not in the open forum.
Thanks,
The Mod Squad.

A razor works with a microtome as long as the edge isn't convex, and there is no real need for it to be flat ground. Books on microscopy often recommend a straight razor without other qualification.
I have a modern Indian (i.e. cheap) microtome blade for use with a basic vintage microtome I bought on eBay. It is flat ground, with a threaded hole instead of a tang, to screw in a handle for honing. It has a C-section steel clip to slide over the spine, to act like extra-thick electrical tape and save you from having to hone the whole surface. But that is only because it is designed for the type of microtome which holds it on little moveable arms, with its spine clear of the surface. For use by hand on a simple plate, you would need a completely straight line, or concave curve, between edge and spine.
I think the only guide to the makers of this razor would be if it had a maker's name on it. Even considering true shaving instruments (which this could still be), plenty of other makers produced razors with lines much resembling Wade and Butcher's.
Another point is that if this was made when aluminium was as valuable as silver, why not treat like silver? When did we last see silver scales as bulky and plainly finished? The only thing suggesting that this razor dates from early Victorian times or earlier is the very shallow curvature of the hollow grind. It may be later, especially if it wasn't intended for shaving, and didn't need to be light. The case is larger than it would need to be, and looks very much like a spectacle case. I don't believe there is much need for a giant to have a specially large razor, unless he was a showoff or exhibition giant, in which case there would be a lot of point in it.Last edited by Caledonian; 07-22-2011 at 12:23 PM.

Thanked: 1936Hopefully it's made of good steel as I would love to see that big ole' boy cleaned up. You are a lucky fellow to have found that rascal for the price you did.
I hope you hang on to it as it is NOT too large to shave with...of course we all would like to hear how it hones up and shaves. I have never had a 10/8 in my hands and really haven't seen too many in pics. Thank you for sharing your prize.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott
