Check out my homemade brush and razor stand!
One of the things I love about SRP is that so many members love to show off their razors and other shaving equipment! Well, it’s my turn now to show off a little. For the last few months the plans were growing in my mind for a brush and razor stand, and after many hours of planning and then crafting—as well as after many rich hours together with my father—I have a homemade, useful, and (I think!) beautiful stand.
The base and top of the stand are made from Bubinga wood (aka African Rosewood) and are finished with two coats of Teak Oil. I’m really glad we decided to go with brass for the post. I think it complements the natural wood quite nicely. Bubinga is very hard wood and is wonderful to work with. It cuts beautifully and when routing and drilling it was almost like milling soft metal. Anyway, it was a pleasure to work with.
The brush and strop are special to me because they belonged to my grandfather who sold these strops years ago in Portland, OR. The front razor is faintly marked on the shank with “Wellington” and is the blade I am learning on. I guess I must make a comment about the soap bowl. Yes, it is a Van Der Hagen bowl! There, I said it. Hey, it works great and I think it looks just fine.
Thanks for sharing my joy of shaving, guys!

Great work for a legacy set. You should be very proud to give those razors such a nice home. The hagen bowl is under rated because it has the wallmart stink on it. They actually work better than the AOS one for a lot. More money. All you do is fill the sink up with warm water and let the bowl rest in it while shaving...like a giant scuttle..It's old school, but effective.

Thanked: 1936Nice work Temno! Never be ashamed of your equipment. What works for you is all that matters. I've still got my VDH bowl as well, mine has a puck of MWF in the bottom of it IIRC. Love the strop, especially since it's got family history behind it.
