A 6/8 Joseph Elliot, double thumb notch and original scales
There's a fair bit of work to do on this one, but I've lusted after those double-notched tangs since I first saw one. The original pressed-horn scales are a nice plus, too. I don't think there's anything wrong with this one that I can't fix. I don't mind patina normally, but this poor fella will probably get refinished. I think it's been sanded before and and not up to my spec.
I'd guess this is probably late 1830's. All the other blades I've seen in this style have had etchings on the blade, but any etchings this one had are long-lost to the atmosphere.-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.

Nice one Voidy - your accruing quite the collection of interesting old sheffields! How do the double notches feel in hand?

The double notch feels good. I won't really know until I can shave with it, but that's a ways off. The scales are loose enough that I don't want to hone it (the heel drops through sometimes), and they're loose because of a crack at the toe. Normally I'd just tighten the pins and hone away, but this one will need to be stabilized first.
I'm thinking I'm going to need to get a good picture of all my old Sheffield razors and put it in the appropriate club, 'cause yeah -- I have a lot of them. 28, I think. But that counts all the Sheffield blades. If I just count ones before 1860, the number drops down to the low teens.-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.
