Thanked: 884Looks to me like it was "hot blued" like a gun.
I remember when I was working in a gun shop and we did hot bluing, that you could get a nearly black finish if you left it in the tank long enough.
Good lookin razor for sure.

This IS a blued blade, Wullie, but not hot-blued, as the temperature would compromise the blade integrity.
Also, I've been wanting to get this blade since I've first found it! I have to say, i'm glad you got it before me, as i'm dying to hear a review on it. I've read some other reviews on Hart Steel, and they seem to know pretty damn well what they're doing, so I just might get one for myself. Good purchase, Rivera!

I have gone to Straight Razor Heaven and came back to tell you that this blade is awesome! Shaved last night and WOW! I know you all know that sensation when you first put that blade on your cheek and think "Ok this is the moment of truth". This blade reminds me why I switched over to straight razor shaving. My eyes were wide open in amazement of the smooth glide. I loved the feeling of the quarter ground weight. The guys at Hart Steel did a wonderful job! The out of box sharpness is excellent. I cannot express the feeling of urgency that I felt while shaving of letting you guys know that you need to try these Hart Steel razors. If any of you are looking in the market of buying a new razor, I strongly recommend trying Hart Steel out! I know ill be getting another, maybe a satin finish square point. Anyways I hope you are able to check out Hart sometime these guys are awesome! Have a good one guys.

Looks like a great shaver!
I too am not so fond of the blade, I think it is a bit too unicoloured for me.. Nice to hear it's such a good shaver, see you in SRH

Thanked: 0Hey Rivera805, any updates since your first shave? I am especially curious: did the black fade/scratch away with honing?
(Couldn't find any info on that anywhere!)
Cheers!

Thanked: 0Hey all,
So I finally found the answer, thought I'd share for others seeking answers to the same question. Turns out that Hart Steel hones their razors with electric tape at the factory:
"At Hart Steel, we use one layer of electrical tape, to protect the spine, while honing. The tape is placed lengthwise on the spine and then folded over the sides. The tape is optional, but we like it."
http://www.hartsteel.com/honing.html
As a result, I figure that if you buy the "Not a Replica," when honing you might as well tape it to protect the spine, and to prevent modifying the bevel too much (since deciding to hone without the tape would then change the bevel).

Thanked: 884Hot bluing is hot, but rarely over 310°F which shouldn't be hot enough to affect the temper of any modern steel.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:T...cksmithing.JPG
It is hot enough to melt some solders that hold less expensive double barrels together.
Whatever means they used ended up looking very nice.
