Yeah, those are nice, but beyond my ability. I just went for a simple design. It's just two layers of the black waxed cotton string.

Many kamisoris have pieces of wood on the sides of the "handle" and then they are wrapped with some string, that way the handle gets all round.
It's usually made to be a perfect place for rust to live in but that's how they did it, have never seen any wax or such used for protection.
If I would wrap one up now I would use wax, lacquer, paint or even epoxy for protection.

I've got a kamisori with an unfeasibly skinny handle, and I've been thinking of black or clear plasti dip (for bulk and rust-proofing) and then a more traditional-looking wrapping.

There's a thread on one that I did a while back -- I painted the tang with a couple of coats of Hammerite before wrapping it.
It looks a lot better once you've done it than you'd first imagine.
