Default Antique finds while on vacation...

All in pretty good shape. The Fat Boy just needs a good cleaning.

Anyone ever try plating old DE's? What's all involved in that?

    Nice haul.

I haven't re-plated any yet. Seems from my limited research to be beyond economical. If anyone has cost effective ways to plate DE's I'm all ears, i have a couple in the "to be restored" pile that need it.

I've had it done...I made a Frankenrazor out of a W&B handle and a Gillette long comb head. Cost about $40 in nickel...can cost way more for silver, gold, or especially rhodium. Unless you are keeping the razor forever, it is cost prohibitive...you'll never get your money out of it if you try to resell

I like the idea of nickel. Would that $40 worth be enough for 5 or 6 DE's? In your opinion.

No, I haven't done it myself...don't have the equipment...it cost $40 per DE to have it replated

+1 on the above advice. This site sells plating equipment if ya want to try your hand at it: Plating Kits Electroplating Kits Aluminum Anodizing Kits Powder Coating Systems Metal Polishing And Buffing Supplies - Caswell Inc

You will need to strip the plating off the razors before re-plating them. It's not hard but requires extremely clean metal to achieve a good plating. I have not re-plated any razors.

What's the base metal on most of the older Gillette's?

Read this but haven't done it... You may want to contact local replaters in your town and see if they do that kind of work. That may have a min$ so you'd pay by that and not the piece. See examples before you decide.
