    Default New Revisor Extra

Just got my new Revisor Extra 6/8 this morning in the mail. It took 11 days to arrive in Canada to my door. That is not too bad considering there was a 3 day national holiday and customs in between. No major complaints about the razor either. It arrived after I had already done a 3 pass shave with a disposable this morning that I tested for traveling with. The disposable did a decent enough job, I might add. I did not want to wait until tomorrow to try the Revisor so I gave it a hard test. Rinsed the blade in hot water and dried it, lathered up with Proraso and commenced shaving with no pre stropping. All I can say is the factory edge removed whiskers left behind by the disposable so while the factory edge may not be as refined as some would want it did indeed do a good job all considered. When I get my pasted strop and hones I will try and refine the edge a bit. I really like the razor and my dealings with Mr. Kronenberg were very satisfactory. I am too new to shaving with a straight so will not give a detailed full review as that might be unfair.

Nice razor. if you shaved with it with no prep and like the results, wait until you put a proper edge on it and do some prep. Use it in good health.

Just to be sure on one point, and that is I liked the results considering it is an edge right from the factory, I did no stropping on my hanging leather strop, there was not much in the line of whiskers left from a 3 pass shave done 3 hours previously and I had no discomfort. I just meant that the factory edge is not as unusable as might be supposed and maybe I got lucky on that angle. Yea looking forward to tuning the edge a bit.

My usual prep is to make lather, douse my face with hot water, lather up and shave. I get BBS shaves from my DE this way which are slightly closer and smoother than with my straights. I would put that down to being a real rookie with a not so polished technique with a straight.

Considering all that I think the razor did very well and like you say should improve when all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.

Just a quick up date on the factory edge thing. Got my pasted balsa strop today so gave the razor 20 laps on it, 10 on the hanging felt and 30 on the leather hanging strop. Did a quick lather with Cella and was rewarded by a smoother closer shave. That reinforces the common wisdom of having a new razor professionally honed before using. If I knew what I was doing I bet it would take a great edge after a little stone work. Anyway, usable new but better now.

One final update. Got enough practice in using my hones that I got up the nerve try them on a brand new razor. Refreshed the edge of the Revisor last night and shave this morning with it. Even with my rookie honing skills it now shaves much better than with the factory edge, closer and not as harsh.

That's awesome Bob!! Not as Harsh is huge. I found my Revisors really settled down after I gave them a bit of "love" too!

I really like using this razor because of the shoulderless blade, thumb notch and weight. The only thing about having a thumb notch is that it makes stropping it feel slightly awkward. I just may eventually get another with the same design.
