Default 8/8 aggresive smile Wade and Butcher with barbers notch

In my first few months in this forum there was a post on a restored razor with a shape similair to this one. I don't remember what brand it was but there was some debate that ensued about whether the blade was shaped like that from the factory or if it was a result of a crazy person with a stone and too much time on their hands. I immediately honed in on the conversation...One of the posts mentioned that it originally came like that from the factory because the barbers notch was positioned so high towards the spine.......

I always like the extreme curve of the blade and set out on a RAD mission to find my own before i died....LOL
I trust that this isn't a bad example of honing either. Any info would be appreciated.

I present you with my legacy....May my name live on forever

Nice! I tend to think it was done on purpose. I have seen many old big ones with this blade shape. I think no one made one like this, but owners desired it. This old wedge does not seem to have the heavy hone wear associated with it being honed that way. I love my smiling blades. Maybe some old-timers did too! If you get a good bevel, that thing will suprise you! Enjoy!

Thanks y'all. I hope someone comes through and points me in the right direction for that post. I've been searching using key words like" notch" and "smile" to see if I can find it but no luck yet.

First reverse taper I've see that wasn't made by Marshes & Shepard. I really like the look of them too, have been designing a custom along the same lines.

Yes Sir. The H.T. Lummus "Old Sheffield Razors" article has a beautiful example on page 266. It is labeled letter "T."
Date 1840 Maker, Marshes & Shepherd.

That article was another confirmation that I had to have a razor shaped like this.

Ok now that I know it's called a tapered blade I will post my findings. So far I found this article at SRP

That one is interesting, first it doesn't appear to have "England" on the blade stamp.

Secondly the scales look more recent than one would normally associate with a pre-1892 or so date. (yes I know that the lack of a country is not always a definite indication of date of manufacture)

Thirdly, the most intriguing part is the tail. None of my W&B's have long tail like that one. None of mine have that reverse tapered blade either.

So I'm wondering if it was modified by the end user or maybe built that way in an attempt at another slice of the market at the time.

I'll guess we know if a bunch of them start showing up. LOL

    Neat old razor for sure.
