Default Okay, fine. I got an 8/8 razor.

And it's got a tiny little crack so far up the toe that the original bevel never went into it.

I've now bought ever single T. Ascher blade I've seen for sale. That means I have three of the four I know exist.

This might count as an obsession.

In any event, I continue to search for any information I can find, but thus far Neil Miller has turned up the most, best information. It's all over in this thread.

So there are exceptions to my philosophy of "let the folks that love them buy all the big razors".

Cool nice razor and another one with a Masonic theme, there have been a few Masonic razors posted lately.

This is a general question for all you restoration experts in the house, has anyone ever tried to stop drill a crack in a blade before? Just wondering stop drilling cracks is common thing to do to cracks in airframe structures.

In my experience, the larger problem of cracks isn't as much that they keep cracking as it is that they make a discontinuous cutting edge which can be actively dangerous.

I have no reason to think that stop drilling the crack wouldn't stop it from going further, but it wouldn't do anything about the existing crack.

That said, investigating laser welds is on my 'to-do' stack, and I've collected a few candidates.

As far as the crack I'd leave well enough alone because of where it is. As for announcing to the world that you are after any T. Ascher razors that you may find ...... on the one hand I guess it may turn up something you otherwise might not have found. OTOH it may generate interest, hence competition.

There is a Solingen made razor that I have been collecting for a few years now. It is a relatively obscure brand and I have never posted a photo or let anyone know what it is. I have not been looking for them lately as I am becoming satisfied with what I have but I keep my secret to myself. If I ever do decide to begin searching them out again I don't want them to be any more popularly known than they are already.

Nice set of T. Aschers you've got. Best of luck on adding more variants to the collection.

Yeah, I was going to try fixing the crack on a blade I got for the purpose. I don't see a reason to do anything to this one.

You're absolutely right about announcing my collecting habits. I just want everybody to know that I'm personally testing *all* the Ascher razors... And while at first I thought that one was great, more experimentation has proved disastrous. These razors are all dangerous. Long-term use causes dyspepsia, epistaxis, pandiculation, fingernail gout, Hanson's disease (in pet armadillos), nystagmus, elevated heart rate, and piles. If anyone gets one of these blighted razors, send it to me and I will dispose of it in a special crucible.

Seriously, at this point I just want to SEE more. Maybe my advocacy will get some out there.

    Love the etching.

That was probably about as special to someone back in the day as customs are today...which is pretty cool if you think about it.

Nice piece of history you have there!

Interestingly, Ascher was almost certainly not actually a Sheffield maker, just a merchant who got razors branded with his name.

I thought I remembered seeing this razor in my history. Little more than I wanted to pay, but I was watching that one. The scales are in awesome shape, and the polish on the blade...
