Thanked: 247I love this stuff (WIP)
Some of you are probably familiar with my affinity for green dyed burls.
I recently received a project to put some scales on a custom knife made from the same material I made some razor scales with.
It turned out pretty good. Ill post up some images later if anyone is interested.
Anyway, I pulled out some more today to do a more rounded monoslab (my previous efforts were blocky, which I likes, but the edges looked a bit harsh for the flowing wood grain)
These images are just a work in progress as they are just the unfinished slab, but the images are after shaping and sanding.
I'm pretty fired up because they already show finger prints and will reflect light glare. I think once I finish them they will be really something. I just cannot decide is I want to simply wax it or put a high gloss coat on it.
After the moisture dried:
Suggestions are welcome

Thanked: 247Here is the knife handle I did. This gives an idea how it looks waxed (though the final sanding grit on this piece was somewhat lower that the razor mono slab).

Thanked: 3224Nice work, can't say I blame you for liking that dyed burl wood so much.

Thanked: 247I purchase it that way.
Thanks.
It actually developed a depth in appearance that I cannot capture a photo of. In the right light it looks a bit like Damascus, and in other light it looks more like marble.
You can see the gloss/reflectivity of the wood in these, but I think you need stereo vision (two eyes) to capture the depth (marble effect). I think a high gloss finish will end the Damascus look, but these scales are anything but subtle, so I may try it.Last edited by unit; 07-06-2013 at 11:48 PM.

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
