Thanked: 1587I can only speak to my circumstances. Yes, I was once a moderator but stepped down when I realised I couldn't put the time and effort into the position that it required and deserved.
But, being as I am a wealth of knowledge and information () it was thought I might still be involved in "advising" - giving input and suggestions/advice to the mods and seniors and admins on stuff that comes up, being a pain in the butt and so on and so forth. I think also "smart ass" plays a role too in my case
There's a couple of little things I do too - muck around with some of the technical things sometimes, though not so much lately, like the classifieds software update and review software.
So, to summarise, I kinda hang out with the mods (though not as much lately due to work commitments) and provide another perspective on things on occasion. I think Mike does the same thing, but in a more considered way!I think we are the only two Advisors, is that right Mike?

Yes, pretty much consigliere.
For example, sometimes I would ask them if I've gone soft on bans and not doing enough of them...
No, not really - there's actually a theorem that there's never enough bans, at least that's what they taught me in mod school.
The advisors have access to all of the discussions that we have about running the forum, but they're not involved in executive way as the moderators. They only have soft power so they can offer different perspective. That's why we have Mike and Jimbo - even the most egomaniacal among us likes them enough to hear what they have to say.

Thanked: 995I bring a hammer. I suppose that I can tap softly if that's what Jimbo regards as "considered way." I think they stopped at two because beyond that is a critical mass and they didn't know what would happen. Now that I think if this, they keep us on opposite ends of the planet too, hmmm.
When I found myself finding doors to open into the backrooms of SRP I felt like this (it's longish but really there are several vignettes that remind me of those first heady days of Yuri Gagarin...):
