I don't think it makes much sense to replace an auction with an auction. It seems easier to let the market determine what something is worth. And to not take any of it personally.

A fella might die the slow death of too many PM's...
Might go like this:
Seller: I've got this rare thing that I know would be great for your collection that I would like to sell for as much as possible. You decide how much is possible, PM me.
Buyer: What is it?
Seller: It's rare, NOS probably, with some specks.
Buyer: Any pics?
Seller: I'd like to keep the playing field level by not supplying pics. PM me if you want some fuzzy pics.
Buyer: I'll give you a thousand dollars for it site unseen if you get it in the mail tomorrow.
Seller: That would not be fair to the others who may be interested, but I'll get back with you in a couple of weeks..."Call me Ishmael"

Thanked: 4826Well that was sort of what I was leaning towards. We could advertise items that we wanted to sell or trade and the negotiating would go via PM. Sounds pretty reasonable. The current classifieds has kind of that ability but it needs to have a firm price. It would be nice if there was a section that a price was not necessary. We could trade or sell there with the particulars being behind closed doors.

I think the main issue is to not have it be an additional burden upon the Mods. Buyers and sellers are on their own.
As something is posted, that's it. Sort of like the classifieds? Can an item be posted in the classifieds without a firm price?"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."

In that regard, I say post to the classifieds and throw a number up. Deal from there.
I suppose best offer is OK in the classifieds?
