I also like to trade and sometimes I don't know what I want to trade for. On a few occasions people have asked about this or that in a private message and I have figured out a trade with them. It is a lot of fun, a lot more fun than listing in the classifieds. I would really like to have on site sales be a little looser as far as asking prices. I guess the readers digest version is that I kind of like the classifieds but would like something else too.
You could ask for an insane amount and say...or best offer. If the classifieds would allow that.

Is a price posted even necessary? I sell something from time to time and usually ask what the market will bear.
My estimation, meeting in the middle is always good.
Advertise without money talk. That would be to PM's.

A fella might die the slow death of too many PM's...
    Might go like this:
Seller: I've got this rare thing that I know would be great for your collection that I would like to sell for as much as possible. You decide how much is possible, PM me.
    Buyer: What is it?
Seller: It's rare, NOS probably, with some specks.
    Buyer: Any pics?
Seller: I'd like to keep the playing field level by not supplying pics. PM me if you want some fuzzy pics.
Buyer: I'll give you a thousand dollars for it site unseen if you get it in the mail tomorrow.
Seller: That would not be fair to the others who may be interested, but I'll get back with you in a couple of weeks...

Obviously, you have never sold much on the Fleabay, Bill!
Good pics and descriptions sell better there. Like anywhere, I suppose.

Well that was sort of what I was leaning towards. We could advertise items that we wanted to sell or trade and the negotiating would go via PM. Sounds pretty reasonable. The current classifieds has kind of that ability but it needs to have a firm price. It would be nice if there was a section that a price was not necessary. We could trade or sell there with the particulars being behind closed doors.

I think the main issue is to not have it be an additional burden upon the Mods. Buyers and sellers are on their own.
As something is posted, that's it. Sort of like the classifieds? Can an item be posted in the classifieds without a firm price?

According to the rules of the game anything posted for sale in the classifieds, or in the old BST has to have a price. Figure out what you want for the thing and post the price. If it is in the ballpark someone might just step up to the plate.

In that regard, I say post to the classifieds and throw a number up. Deal from there.
I suppose best offer is OK in the classifieds?

IIRC just posting something as 'best offer' is not okay. An asking price is what is required in the rules. OTOH, you're free to edit the ad and reduce the price, and maybe even mention that you're 'negotiable' on the price, but there has to be a price. That is with, or without the BIN (buy it now) option.

It's all in the rules accessible in the left hand column on the main SRP page. They put 'em there so the mods could get to them easy .......

    nobody else reads them .....
