Yes! Go look at the ceramic scuttles on SRD website and you can see that you have an top bowl which will accommodate a small pluck of shaving soap . . . .as I said I broke off a piece of the pluck in my Bulldog Shaving Bowl and put it in the scuttle along with some shaving cream from a tube. Works and makes a nice lather! Ed

You all work way too hard.
I was going to make a post of this in the next week, and I still will after I make a video demonstrating the setup. But here, as it may guide you in making the responsible decision:
How to shave prep like a gentleman of science:
I use one of my PID controlled magnetic heat plates, with a scuttle or glassware as double boiler, set the temp, toss a dollop of cream in the bowl with a splash of water on the teflon stir bar. Set the temp and take a shower- come out and the cream is at the exact temperature I desire.
It makes my lather, perfect too I might add as you can see in pic 3, pic 2 is the vortex of the stir bar whipping the shave cream.

Sounds good jnats! However I don't have a heat plate . . . . . . and it would be just one more thing to store in my already crowded bathroom. Think I will still do it "my way". Thanks for your input, to each their own! Ed

Load my brush from my Tabac jar, transfer to the DB skuttle, repeat a few times, whip up the lather in the skuttle adding some more water as needed. Do this every day. Maybe it's just me but it seems that putting a cake of soap in a skuttle kind of defeats the purpose of using a skuttle.

Thanked: 270I did, before becoming a cold water shaver.
I microwaved water in a big Pyrex pitcher 4 minutes (or until it reached about 165 degrees F measured with a cooking thermometer), and poured it in the outer bowl. I later replaced the microwaving with an electric kettle and let it heat up while I was in the shower (frankly that made the water too hot). I would lather in the inner bowl and it stayed warm for 20-25 minutes. I used a large scuttle for this.
I have read where other people used the scuttle just to keep the brush warm between passes and lathered elsewhere. Lynn Abrams has said he does this using a small scuttle.
Still others have put hot water in the sink and kept shaving bowl with soap there to keep the lather warm. I saw this being done on a YouTube video presented by Mantic59.
Anything that works for you is the way to go.

It seems to me that the purpose of using a scuttle is to produce "warm lather" . . . . .my method accomplishes that purpose. How am I defeating "the purpose of using a scuttle"? Please enlighten me as I said in the beginning of this thread, I am a "newbie" to this madness, but I am no "newbie" to life . . . . .I will be 79 this April. Ironman Ed (the reason I use the profile name "Ironmaned1987" is that I completed the Hawaiian Ironman World Championship Triathlon in 1987 at age 50. My time was 15 hours, 38 minutes and 55 seconds. A little slow but persistent and I made it to the finish line!)
