Scuttle Bowls
Hi all! I am a newbie to this site. I am wondering if anyone uses their scuttle to make lather from shaving soaps? I was told that you should make your lather in a "shaving bowl" and then transfer the lather via your brush to the scuttle to keep the lather warm. However, I don't see any reason to not just make your lather right in the scuttle and eliminate the shaving bowl all together. Please advise. Thank you!

I usually face lather, but occasionally will use a scuttle when want warm lather on a cold winter day. If you have a full sized scuttle, you should make your lather in the scuttle. Most scuttles have ridges to aid with making the lather. I do have what is called a brush scuttle, which is too small to build a lather in, and only large enough for my brush, and it keeps my lather warm while I'm making my first pass with the razor.

I have a beautiful DB scuttle and that's how I learned to lather. I very rarely use it now unless it's cold out and it's still far and few between. It's a great experience but not an everyday thing.

Thank you, Richard! I have a full size ceramic scuttle which I purchased from SRD. I will start making my lather right in the outer bowl and bypass the shaving bowl. First I will fill the inner bowl of the scuttle with boiling water from my tea kettle. Should work!

I used my scuttle today. Loved it! I'll admit that it is more work to boil the water in the tea kettle, so I may not do this every time, but now I know that you can make lather (and it's nice warm lather) from a pluck of shaving soap in the large ceramic scuttles that are sold by SRD. Just make sure that your pluck will fit in the scuttle. Today I used a part of a Trumper pluck from my Bulldog Shaving Bowl (also from SRD). Trumper plucks are quite large so they will not fit whole in my scuttle. I just broke off a piece with a spoon. You can also add shaving creams if you want to experiment. Just have fun and Happy Shaving! Ed
