Thread: Scuttle Bowls

Load my brush from my Tabac jar, transfer to the DB skuttle, repeat a few times, whip up the lather in the skuttle adding some more water as needed. Do this every day. Maybe it's just me but it seems that putting a cake of soap in a skuttle kind of defeats the purpose of using a skuttle.

It seems to me that the purpose of using a scuttle is to produce "warm lather" . . . . .my method accomplishes that purpose. How am I defeating "the purpose of using a scuttle"? Please enlighten me as I said in the beginning of this thread, I am a "newbie" to this madness, but I am no "newbie" to life . . . . .I will be 79 this April. Ironman Ed (the reason I use the profile name "Ironmaned1987" is that I completed the Hawaiian Ironman World Championship Triathlon in 1987 at age 50. My time was 15 hours, 38 minutes and 55 seconds. A little slow but persistent and I made it to the finish line!)

My opinion only, the bottom of the skuttle bowl should stay the warmest. If a cake of soap is in the skuttle with just the lather on the upper portion of the bowl, there is little surface contact to keep the lather warm. If you have just lather in the bowl you have more surface area keeping the lather warm.

If it works for you that's how you do it, but the scuttle is for producing warm lather not to use as a soap dish , that's what's being said here you load brush then whip lather in the scuttle , ,, your just using the puck the whole time continuisly , hard to get a proper lather if at some point you don't get off the puck,, but as said its your scuttle and the rules are there are no rules, heck if you want you can use anything you want , but for a bowl to keep my soap in, I could think of something better suited, like you said your new, and at your age, you may have used a brush and soap in the past I know I did. Thanks Tc! I got the message! I been using the pluck too much to make my lather; I will start whipping up some lather in my shaving bowl and then transfer the lather to the scuttle to keep it warm. I watched some of Lynn's videos and I can see that you don't need a lot of lather to transfer to the scuttle. I'll work on it until I find my "sweet spot" in the amount of lather to transfer. Currently I do not shave with a straight razor . . . . that is my next adventure that I would like to learn! I am currently using Gillett Pro Blade cartilages with a real horn handle. Yes, generally you load your brush with soap from the puck, then raise the lather elsewhere. It's not wrong to build the lather on the puck, but it probably uses the soap faster as you'll whip up far more lather than you need.
