For what it's worth, I think this reputation thing idiotic. Who cares? If I were selling things, reputation would be important. If I comment on things and am correct in my assessments, but others don't like how I express myself, my reputation will likely be at toilet level at best. This has nothing to do with my right-ness, only how my observation or telling of them may be perceived.

So for this new whatchmacallit --

I invite all to ruin my reputation, maybe it will simply be the the step before banishment.

Oh, by the way, what guise will this negative reputation assume? Little red squares? Thumbs with dirty nails pointed to the nether regions?

I welcome the ability to, at a glance, assess someone's character and importance visually. Marking people with boxes is, I think, entirely appropriate for this purpose.

I for one intend to shun anyone with a poor reputation. One cannot be too careful about who one consorts with in today's world. Leper!!

You can't see if someone received extra "reputation" on a certain post, can you? (just wondering)
Exactly- I think there is a big difference between an overall reputation that someone has and what someone says in a particular post. Seeing where someone gave a +1 on a specific thread would be helpful.

I can't agree more. Reputation points could obviously be used for the wrong reasons in the wrong sections. Personally I am undecided on the whole reputation aspect. I think it is a great idea initally, but then I think about what built someone's reputation before- people beginning to recognize your name and the quality of your posts and character. That is still the main reputation rating in my mind.

Another forum I attend to uses rep. Here's a little experience to go on.

It's really up to the rep giver to be the guide as to how to give rep. For the most part, rep is often given for humorous commentary and posts that are indirectly connected to the forum content, by friends in circular fashion. So in that case, someone who comes along and runs up their post count and has a high rep count, appears more wise than others even though it might be based on a bias.

You could consider adding another measure, like rep power, which will identify the strength or validity of the rep present. This would be another function for the moderators. They can, with their god-like prowess, add or subtract depending on other intangibles like the value of a contribution or running along saying stupid things or just posting a boatload of "me-too's".

However, giving negative rep, always means trouble and sets up feuds worst than the Hatfields and McCoys.

Personally I do a little quick math in my head and figure out the Post to Rep ratio. It's much better in my mind to have a High Rep and Low Post count than the other way round.

Some of us are more active in Chat than on the Forums. Will the Reputation System reflect our contributions (or distractions) to Chat?

It has been mentioned on the original thread, yeah. It may have been mentioned on this one as well but regardless, Old_School is right. My suggestion was intended to relate to particular posts rather than give kudos to each other because we are all so cool.

    Even though we are.
