Thanked: 1262"The Wiki Crew proudly annouce the Straight Razor Database
Dear fellow shavers,
Straight Razor Place Forums - The SRP Documentation Team (aka The Wiki Crew) are pleased to announce the release of the SRP Straight Razor Database v.0.0.1.
The aim of the DB is to generate an all-encompassing, earth shattering collection of straight razors.
You can contribute to the DB, and share your knowledge with the rest of the global shaving community, by filling in the form found in Category:Straight Razor Database - Straight Razor Place Wiki.
The advantage over the existing razor clubs in the forum is that the DB is actually searchable along criteria of your choice, ex: Grind Full Hollow - Straight Razor Place Wiki.
Please bear in mind that you need to be logged into the Wiki with your SRP credentials. Instructions can be found here: Main Page - Straight Razor Place Wiki.
Please add any suggestions you have for things you would like to see added/removed/changed.
Right now I am working on making it a little easier to browse/search.Last edited by Slartibartfast; 03-21-2009 at 10:42 PM.

Thanked: 1903Sterling stuff, Ben. The semantic wiki extension has some great potential.
Oh yeah, big kudos, as always, to Dave for installing the necessary software!
And now... add your razors!Last edited by BeBerlin; 03-22-2009 at 08:53 AM.

Absolutely fantastic!! Thank you very much!! Just few notes:
I have to say that the alphabetical order of makers seems a bit "random", and this could be very dangerous in a data base. Strict rules regarding how to insert new records could be helpful.
For instance: this year looks "strange", and in this page you find Henkels under letter J. Name and surname or name of the company should probably be kept separated or in a particular order (ex: Henkels, J. A.).

I forgot to suggest this field: Inserted by.
EDIT: oh... and I forgot to mention this: Here, for instance, you read two times the model (415), in the "manufacturer" field and in the "model" field.
EDIT2: whould it be possible to prepare a menu (now almost empty) containing the list of manufacturers that can be updated when inserting new records? In this way if a manufacturer already is present in the DB, his name will be written everytime in the same way. For new manufacturers, a new name could be added to the list of manufacturers.
EDIT3: Would it be possible to use also a reference to the Henckel's chart for the "grind" field? OK, it could be quite difficult to choose an exact number from the chart.Last edited by clavichord; 03-21-2009 at 08:14 PM.

Thanked: 1262Hey.. I setup autocomplete on most of the fields. now when you start to type in a name, a drop down with similar names will pop.
Still working on getting a more organized way to view it.. i think your going to like it...if I mange to get it working right

Oh, I read just now..
Here you find the Henckel's chart (under "Widths and grinds"). I like to use it, even if some approximation is required.
..but I feel that not everybody like it.

I am going to insert some razors of the same manufacturer, similar grind and width, but definitly all different variations of "common" shapes and common tastes during the XIX c. (different points, different scales, etc..). The resulting titles could be all similar (ex: Wade&Butcher, 6/8, 1/2 hollow). After my first entry, nodody else could use the same title. I suggest:
1. allowing the use of the same title for different pages (dangerous);
OR
2. allowing the use of some ordering number:
2a: absolute numbering: as Wade&Butcher #1;
2b: numbers refered to a private collection, as Wade&Butcher [clv001] (3 letters and 3 numbers available).
I will use 2b, but just let me know what you prefere and I'll change.
This wiki section is absolutely fantastic!!!

Thanked: 1903Oh, lovely. I really hadn't thought about this... But 1. won't happen, as using an existing title will let you edit that razor.
I think a slightly more technical solution is asked for. Such as a DB sort key. Interesting...
