There's so much subtlety to a good edge. I can get a blade to shave easily, but how comfortable is that shave? A little extra effort on the hones will produce a very comfortable shave. Pictures after the fact would be the same, but the feel during and after would be quite different. A sustained effort with the hones will produce a truly wonderful shave that still looks the same as the lesser edges. It IS all about how it feels IMO.

Gee, I can't believe you guys are making such a big deal out of this thing. The titles are really meaningless and personally I think they should be dropped and just have the post counts.

Hey we could have a convention once a year and all meet somewhere and have different competitions for stropping, honing, shaving kind of like that lumberjack competition they have each year. The guy who shaves the fastest with the fewest cuts wins now that would be something!

In my experience, those with a high number of posts are not always those with the most knowledge... some are, while others are just very communicative/social on the forum. And unfortunately (as Rob said) a few will just be posting to raise their counts.

That said, titles and ranks are somewhat traditional on most forums, and often provide a point for some healthy "kidding around" when certain members make it to a new level. I agree that we probably should add a few more levels, and the thresholds could use some upward adjustments. I checked the posts count for the top members and was surprised that only 15 have > 200 posts, and only 3 are >500 with the top one being 649.

I'd suggest we let it run as-is for awhile (until there are more posters with higher counts) and then change it... that way there will be a more meaningful distribution for those that care to put some value in these types of things. What da ya think?

I think if you keep that avatar Joe, we'll have plenty to dirstact us from "titles".
