I am so used to it I never thought about it being changed. I think it is less clutter on the page if you're surfing looking for something you haven't read yet. OTOH, maybe some would like it the other way.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

It would be really cool if the user could set that feature to their own preference. That, though, I doubt would be practicable. But either way, it's not a big deal; I'll adapt and get another cup of coffee, or after hours another

I prefer the "new posts" to be the way it is here. There are other forums I use where it works as you describe and displays threads that have been posted to within the last hour or so. For me I like a list of what I haven't seen yet.
