Thanked: 3795Thanks as feedback
I've been wondering why some relatively new members, whom I rarely see posting, have quite high thanks counts. I finally figured it out today because I did something I hardly ever do--I looked in the Shave Of The Day section. It turns out that lots of posts in there routinely get 20 or more thanks.
This is just an observation, not a complaint, that the thanks count is about as helpful as the former reputation marks.

That is a very interesting observation regarding "Thanks." I have been a member of this fantastic forum for a little over a year, but that thought has crossed my mind as I've read through various threads. It does seem strange to come across fairly new members, let's say less than a year's membership, who have high "Thanks" counts vs. their "posts" counts. I log-in to this site maybe a couple of times a day, but I don't always have something to post or reply to, so I just read what's new. As far as SOTD goes, I think we have some great photographers in our midsts, but it's not a thread I check out or give "Thanks" to on a regular basis as it only encourages my AD's.
That's just my 2 cents worth...and "Thanks" for reading. Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

Strangely enough, I noticed the same thing yesterday, & came to the same conclusion. Maybe we were looking at the same member?

i was considering posting an sotd just so i could have a high thanks count..
anyway.. as a side note.. i tend to hit the thanks button more in a "cheers" fashion.. if i agree with what has been said.. even if it hasn't been particularly useful.. was the thanks count meant for something else?

Newcomer's POV
Ron,
You're right on the money. As one of those newcomers, I just paid attention (after reading this post) to my thanks count and it is up there. I, personally, enjoy the SOTD section...not because of the "thanks" (which I couldn't care less for me), but because I can share something I enjoy (photography and shaving) and enjoy seeing others' as well...I have learned some ins-and-outs about hardware/software from this section (as well as other sections).
I do understand the concerns raised and I think it should probably be addressed...the "thanks" in the SOTD section is in a different category than a "thanks" a member gets for making a real contribution to a thread/post or in someone decision to buy/restore or sell a razor/brush/etc...a distinction between the two is lacking. The "thanks" you get for making a difference in someone's shave routine and the "thanks" I get for posting in an SOTD are totally different animals with different values and should be treated differently.
Personally, I feel like the "thanks" I have received have diluted some of contributions the veterans' in SRP have made over the months and years.
Solution: I honestly don't have one, but I will be equally happy if my "thanks" were removed since I have no control over who thanks me or doesn't...at least until such time when my experience warrants this distinction (maybe in 10 years or so).

Thanked: 240I have noticed the same thing and it was puzzleing "thanks" for pointing out the cause. To me it is similiar to a members ranking (ie junior, senior) as you can see I am labeled as a senior member yet have only been here for little over 4 months. Clearly I should not be thought of a senior by anyone, I just like to post. All I can say is look at all of a persons stats before determining the value of their comment. I think the most important stats are join dates and posts, taken together. A high number of posts mean nothing and a join date of years ago means nothing but both means the person has probably been active for some time, and probably has a wealth of know. If I am answering a question I try to make it clear I am new and to take my comment lightly as there will be more senior members coming later with better insight. Regardless I do like to see a high thanks number next to my name maybe I'll post more often on SOTD. Of course a "thumbs up" button or something of tge like could help. Good for SOTD or when a customizer has a new razor to show off, I will often use tge thanks button in these circumstanes yet that's not really what I wanna do just applaud their fine efforts.
