Thread: < banned user > ???

I'm no where near knowing how the background stuff works, so likely I'm all sorts of wrong

I seem to remember seeing banned users come back. I assume "ban" can be temporary or permanent suspension. I imagine it is case by case pending details of event(s)

Point I am poorly making, sometimes an online acquaintance might be back, but maybe not. Or I could be way off.

Don't sweat it. Most people have never read the rules. I admit I didn't when I signed up.
It is very rare for people to get banned. When it happens, it is not because you inadvertedly broke a rule you didn't know about and then got banned instantly.

If you break a rule, you will be contacted in private and someone will explain what was the problem, and we leave it at that.
As long as a member is willing to work with us, we work with them. What doesn't work is if people start insulting us (or other members for that matter) or intentionally create problems. For example, getting into an angry argument in public and calling us post nazis is one way to get banned.

Most bans also are temporary in nature. For example, getting into a heated argument and calling people names in the heat of the moment can lead to a temporary ban to cool off.

Long ago when I taught the Kuwaiti military, a student came to me just before departure to training in Australia. He wanted to know if Australians drive on the right or the left, which at the time I didn't know. T advised him to just do the same as all the other people.

On this site, you have to behave distinctly differently from what you see around you, to get into trouble.

Well that way of behaving is one of the reasons I'm here and what I like about this place, some other forums could learn for it!

One large forum had a cull of members who were active on a British shaving forum, there was no discussion or explanation at the time. I did get a subsequent apology from the site owner and an offer to reinstate, apparently the mod(s) responsible had thought that we were going to do something "wacky" so just banned en-mass before any rules were broken.

On the forum that I help moderate, for example, the only way to earn an instant ban is by spamming. We actually consider "whacking spammers" as a kind of macabre sport. While there have been others who have earned the wrath of the administration, it normally takes sustained effort rather than a one off accident.
