Thread: Has SRP been hacked or what?

Yes and no. The site is free to use, but it certainly is not free to run. So, in addition to all the people who donate their skills, time, and effort to keep the bits flowing, somebody also picks up the tab at the end of the month. That's what those banner ads to the site sponsors do, as well.
The thing is that legally we do have the right to put those links, it's in the terms and conditions everybody has to agree with during registration. Obviously we are not interested in censoring members' posts or putting words in their mouth. In fact we have one of the most respectful moderating policies among the shaving sites in this regard.
But at the same time I don't feel that I have to give notification about every single minor thing I do, especially when it's (1) very temporary (initially I intended it for a day or two, but had to extend it because of various issues) (2) relatively innocent. At some point these things are a matter of a judgment call because my time is also valuable - the more I spend on public relations, the less I have to spend on fixing broken stuff and making improvements.
I think as long as we're all reasonable and keep in mind the big picture, we can all get along and continue helping each other.

How little respect do we get?
Seems members on this site are subject to very little respect from at least one site administrator. Our posts can be modified at will and whim as seems fit or arbitrarily decided by an administrator. It's in the "contract" guys! The one you signed when you joined this forum.
So here is my death knell as I post gugi's response to my previous post:
Hi,
Looks like you're rather opinionated about what the site administrators should do. I am one of the administrators, and I can answer your question who gave me the right to modify your post.
You did when you agreed to the Terms and Conditions before you could register to the site.
I read the legal requirements before I turned that piece on and I'm pretty sure we're well in compliance with them.
Regards,
--gugi
It has been a blast being a part of this site. Since my name is now MUDD, I doubt that any post I submit will have any value. I made some good friends here who I will miss. Just know this: when power is abused, someone has to challenge it.

Has SRP been hacked or what?
Frame of reference guys - the sites not free to run and the controversial in post auto linking(?) has been disabled. Lets ALL just keep our eyes on the prize! (the best damn shaving forum around).

Randy, I was just trying to ease you down a little. Sorry, if it did not. This is a great place with great people, you are one on them.
Sleep on your thoughts tonight, tomorrow, come back, be with us & enjoy the ride.

Very good, so according to you SRP does not respect member's posts (even though our policy is that when they are in violation of the rules we only remove them and leave it up to the member to make any changes; feel free to go to other big shaving forums and see how they do things over there), yet you show your highest regard for Private Messages by making them public.
Yes, you can stand to the abuse of power if you like. I explained why I made the judgment I did and even if I was wrong, I have been completely clear and honest about my reasons. I cannot stop anybody from leaving this site, anymore than I can make them join it. I'm simply doing my best, just like most of the other members who make SRP what it is.

Thanked: 88Come on man, this is not a hill worth dying on. Context-oriented ads are nothing new. I don't like this particular way of doing it, but the admin already told you it was a brief experiment. Why the over-reaction?

Thanked: 1195This one's teetering on the edge guys. Perhaps the OP should take a few minutes to cool down and try to look at things in perspective...

We are all naturally entitled to our opinions but as someone who has largely sat on the sidelines on other discussions regarding the administration of this site I feel I must respectfully voice my disagreement with your position on this one.
Prior to this one, I have had 545 posts on SRP and have not once felt that my opportunity to express myself has in any way been impinged by those who moderate or administer the site. Nor have I had a post edited or modified. That's not a bad record IMHO.
The appearance of links in posts is for me an annoyance. It happens on many, many forums that I have frequented, and does not appear, in my experience at least, to be an unusual occurrence. Do I like it when links appear on SPR? Not at all. But at the same time I am more than sympathetic to the need to actually run the place. And as Gugi pointed out, volunteerism can only carry a site so far. At some point there will be actual bills that need to be paid. Because of this I am both supportive of their attempts to find creative ways to finance the site, and willing to put up with minor annoyances such as automatically-generated links.
I hope those links disappear and do not return. But more than anything I continue to be extremely grateful to those who keep this remarkable place up and running.
Respectfully,
Cangooner
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Guys, if I have over reacted, I apologize. As good advice has been given, I do need and will give considerable thought into this matter. I would ask only that gugi do the same.
