Mitchells Wool Fat Question
First off, I've never been real lucky with MWF. I recently received a Dirty Bird scuttle, and thought I'd try the Fat in it. I loaded up the brush, squeezed it out in the scuttle and reloaded without adding more water to the brush. After a minute of swirling, I got the usual thin, airy mix I always get from the Fat. Too my surprise, when I removed the brush from the scuttle and test lathered on my palm, the lather thickened up as it cooled. Has anyone else experienced this thickening when using a scuttle? Now I'm hooked on my scuttle, and the MWF!

Just how hot is your scuttle? Heat can cause any lather to break down. MWF takes a little more water than most to lather and a few extra swirls. Unless you have a hard water issue you shouldn't be having that much trouble.

Thanked: 1195I've never had much of a problem getting good lather from MWF, but I did get great results when I tried it in my new Georgetown G20. Actually I haven't found a soap or cream that doesn't like the G20 yet, which I attribute to the lather ridges in the bowl. I'm guessing your results are similar due to the scuttle itself instead of the temperature, but you never know. Enjoy!

Thanked: 1sounds like you had the water too hot. I have no problems lathering MWF in by DB 1.5 except when I have the water to hot.

I have recently discovered the the technique that works for me with MWF, and it begins with bottled water. I live in an area with very hard water... So hard in fact that most locals don't even drink it from the tap for fear of kidney stones. After loading the brush I face lather first, just to get a layer on there. To me this is key- I squeeze the excess into a bowl, then reload the brush. I then face lather again to thicken up the thin airy lather, then pick up whatever excess I need from the bowl to even out the ratio, be it thin or thick. Usually 2 trips to the puck gives me plenty enough for a whole shave, and I have enough soapy lather in both the brush and bowl to fine tune if I need to.

Wayne,
No shame in Uber'ing. Also, check out Mantic59's MWF vid on youtube. He loads his brush upside down, to get more lather into the brush. Soft water is a plus, so doing the bottle thing may help. Keep at it, and watch the heat.
Uber'ing....Gssixgun has a good recipe for MWF. You can use any neutral shave cream and about 5 drops of glycerin. I use something called "Kiss my Face" it's a pump bottle. That, and the glycerin will give you heaps of lather when added to soaps.
Anyway, Gssixgun's Lanolin Overload: MWF, plus a small dollop of Musgo real shave cream, and 5 drops of glycerin, Mix and enjoy. We have assumed control !
