Mitchell's Wool fat preparation ?
Hey people,
I just got my first puck of MWF and am wondering.......
I might have been mistaken, but is there a procedure
whereby you are supposed to put a little warm water
in the ceramic pot and let it be absorbed into the soap
before you "work up" your first lather ?
I've just come back from a wedding party, and am
suitably "lathered" myself, so apologies for this
Q and A .
Any links to this question (it's probably been asked before)
will be appreciated !!
Best Wishes,
Bongo

Thanked: 1587The thing I remember from MWF was that it took some water in the brush - it may even be worthwhile lathering it up in a mug just to see what ratios work. There are a few threads around but unfortunately I cannot remember the proper key words.
Good luck.

Thanked: 3225Some people add the water to the puck but I just swirl the brush in water, shake it good and load it up on the puck for a good while. Then dip just the tips in water, shake and load some more before building a lather on my face. Works just fine for me.

I remember a video showing to use lukewarm water rather than hot for MWF. As I prep with cold water, I use that instead in a scuttle and take my time building the lather before applying to my face. I too start out with a well-shaken brush, which makes it a bit stiffer and hence scoops up lather from the puck with more ease. I never soak my pucks, never needed to

I put some hot water on the puck while taking my shower. Then shake all water out of the soaking brush....then swirl on puck 35-40 times....lather face 20 seconds...add ten drops of water...lather 20 more seconds....repeat on more time....should have plenty of thick suds now !!!!

I've played around with a couple techniques regarding this soap, and what I have found works best is very similar to mantic's video. I use bottled water (tap is hard), soak both the brush and soap, then I pour out most of the water, shake the brush, then load. Then I face lather which is incomplete, so I load again, then go back to the face. I find that this technique allows me to fine tune the ratio since MWF can be more challenging.

I tried soaking the puck, as in the video, but after reading a couple of threads about MWF becoming difficult to lather and wondering why mine was suddenly a brick, I stopped that practice. The beauty of MWF is the "fat," or as we call it here, lanolin. Soaking the puck will slowly, but surely wash the lanolin from the soap and ruin it. A wet brush is all you need.

Gentlemen,
I can't count how many different methods I have used to lather with Mitchell's Wool Fat and all have had the same result: good lather every time. These days, like my friend GeauxLSU, I don't soak the soap; rather, I use a brush with a little more water than customary with my other soaps. Voila! nice and simple.

I lather all my soaps the same way and it works every time. Wet the brush twirl the brush with a tad of pressure to load the brush then back off the pressure and finish lathering on the face. The only difference is some soaps take a bit more water like MWF and some soaps take a few extra seconds.
But then again Obie already said this.
