African Black Soap Shave Butter Creme
I picked up Shea Moisture shave African black soap at Target today. I read reviews on it from another forum (after I bought it, of course), and the reviews were negative for the most part. I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with this product, and have I made my first wet shave purchasing blunder?

I haven't tried that particular soap but will go to local Target and see if they carry it here. As far as blunders go we would never have advanced out of the stone age without at least a few million blunders. Blunders lead to better future direction. Straight and narrow leads to a very boring life. Not that sin is acceptable, but variations of action helps define the objective. I will concur that blunders are not nice, especially if you are on a tight budget. But as an artist, nothing is ever right the first time. Except when a Renaisance artist was asked by an agent for a Duke if he was qualified to create a mural for him. The artist took a piece of parchment and drew a perfect circle freehand the first time and handed to the agent without comment. Now that's chutzpah!

Try it to find out if YOU like it. Reviews can be helpful, but this hobby is the ultimate YMMV endeavor IME.

I will put a glob of it in my soup warmer/scuttle and give it a shot! I'll review it later.

Thanked: 498I've tried it and found that I couldn't generate any lather with the stuff. I tried a stiffer brush and nothing. The scent was great but as a shaving soap, worthless. J.M.H.O.

I bought the same soap. Read the label again. It says african black soap shave butter, not soap. I use it with my regular soap. I load the brush with my normal soap more than I need too then I place a small chunk (almond size) in a bowl and whip it with my loaded brush, it creates a good long lasting lather however I personally don't like the smell so I quit using it as of late. If you wish to use it on its own, its supposed to go on like a lotion and then you just shave. I didn't like the performance of it by itself either. I wouldn't buy it again.

Thanked: 37I've seen it but I had not tried it. I guess I would prefer to avoid it. I want to try the "classics" first: Proraso, MWF, Tabac, etc.

I've just finished my shave with it- it seemed to work pretty well. I loaded my brush with soap and put a small dollup of the cream on like cosperryan suggested, the lather wasnt super thick or anything, but it did cover up the skin and hair. I did 3 passes with it, and I didnt have to reload the brush. I must say I'm pleased with the results, I did get a very smooth shave from it, but being new to wet shaving, I really dont have much to compare it with.
