I know what you mean about the scent, it did strike me rather quickly and I quite like it, it is a great soap, and as with most of my soaps, after a shave, it's a rinse and then the alum block, so it doesn't linger.

One of my newer soaps that I really like in terms of scent is the DR Harris Windsor, a truly British shave....great stuff...AFAIK it smells like a museum!!

I got my first puck of TABAC. I paired it up with a fresh Viking Sword in my new 1950 Birth Year Super Speed. The 40’ Super Speed handles and shaves great. The TABAC lathered easily and provided a good slick lather. I like the scent, many don’t. I also used Pino Silvestre AS & EdT for the first time today. Addictive! With the TABAC and the Pino, I feel like I am in the Italian Alps on the way to Germany for a Stag hunt!

    A manly shave………

My bowl and puck of Tabac arrived today. Keen to lather up and give it a try…

All I can say how can you not like Tabac? What a soap, beautiful slick lather the best I have seen and so easy to use. And the scent….I'm loving it….

Thats in my top 2…. result….

A little OT but don't you just love the handle on a 40s super speed. The deep knurling, on mine at least, feels and grips the best of all my DEs. Looks a little industrial but the control you get is amazing. The later super speed handles don't feel as good to me.

I agree Bob. I was very pleasantly surprised with both the feel and the balance. I even like the looks!

Tabac is my benchmark soap that I measure all others against. It remains the best overall that I have tried and after a shaky start with the scent it has grown to be a favorite as well. While easy and forgiving to lather I believe its stability over time is its best attribute.

Mike's and DR Harris are the only two others that consistently give smooth and comfortable shaves though I remain loyal to occasional days with Proraso green or red.

    Good post!

I guess I'd be the opposite view!

While I really like MWF, Tabac and DR Harris, all great soaps that I use and think are superb, they are my favorites! I measure the opposite way. A soap better be pretty stunning, as all three above are, to compete with a $10 tub of Proraso! In terms of bang for the buck, you can't beat Proraso, in my opinion, in all areas, scent, lather, quality, etc., in terms of a shaving soap.

The high end soaps I have so far, the MWF, the Tabac, and the DR Harris, are all superb soaps and I enjoy them for their price, which is very reasonable. A big test will be the MDC, at twice the price of MWF etc., it better absolutely blow me away to justify the expense of essentially 6 tubs of Proraso....haha...YMMV.

Having said all that, I do really enjoy experimenting with the different soaps, and after I go through a few more, I'll have enough to shave for the next 300 years!!!

Tabac is a standard that I judge other soaps by and there are a few that I like just as much and some cost less. I am on the fence about trying MDC because I think I will be a bit disappointed that it likely is not 4 times the soap Tabac is. Had the same disappointment with Leica gear compared to Nikon for my purposes. Just too far up the ladder of diminishing return for monies invested.

If for you it's about the cost/benefit of a soap that's 4 times the price, save your money. MdC is my favorite, but it isn't 4 times the soap that tabac is.
