Re: the cold water shave - can only use my own experience as an example, but I have very course beard hair and the skin just under my jawline is a bit sensitive.
After the typical warm/hot water shave, there'd be a fair bit of irritation in those areas.
Tried the cold water shave and had little, if any irritation.
Suspect the cold water tends to 'calm' skin a bit more... plus, closes the pores causing the hairs to stand up more - allowing the razor to cut closer and more comfortably.
Keep in mind it doesn't have to be ice cold water; just slightly cool so your pores close.John

Thanked: 3225In one of the many threads on cold water shaving one of our members pointed out the fact that pores have no muscles so therefore cannot close or open. All I know is that it, cold water shaving, works and is an alternative to using hot water. Been a cold water daily shaver for some time now using only the cold tap to fill my sink.

Thanked: 3225Well here you go:
Once and for all - can pores (on your face) open and close?

Looking around found this on goose bumps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goose_bumps . Seems the hair follicle has a muscle attached to it's base that may react too cold and make the hair follicle stand up. I doubt this would apply to cold water shaving as I have never had goose bumps during a cold water shave.

Thanked: 375In addition to what's all ready been said, I think a beard oil would help save face. I use Mod Cabin grooming oil. It's recommended on the bottle as a shave oil and/or beard oil. I've been using it as a pre-shave oil and aftershave and beard oil. It has Argan oil, Jojoba oil, coconut oil. It absorbs quickly so nothing that you need to wash off, face feels great all day. Not pushing Mod cabin its just one I have used I've made my own also. If you decide to go that route stay away from olive oil and go easy on the coconut oil. I believe both can clog pores.
