T.O.B.S Sandalwood soap in wooden bowl
what's everyone's thoughts on this one...its the round white cake in the wooden bowl....how does it lather for you? how would you rate the "slickness" or glide you get when the razor passes over your skin?
I've been using this one for a few months and so far i love the scent...it seems to make a nice creamy lather with plenty if suds...and it lasts forever....
but i can't really tell if it provides a nice slick cushioned glide over my skin or not since i haven't had the chance to try any other soaps....i do have three SRD Sandalwood shave soap and it seems to produce pretty much the exact same results as the T.O.B.S....i don't really get much of any irritation from either soap...
i guess I'm just wondering everybody's opinion on whether this soap is high quality, or if there is a soap out there, or maybe even a cream that would give me such a comfortable shave that's its in a totally different ballpark from what I'm using now?
thanks for the help!

Thanked: 60I don't have tons of soaps, maybe 10, one of which is TOBS Jermyn Street. I haven't tried anything that puts it to shame yet, but I think MWF is my favorite thus far. I've had better luck with keeping a longer lasting stable lather, which is potentially my lack of skill and experience.

TOBS Sandalwood in a wooden bowl was the first TOBS soap I purchased 25 years ago in London and the puck has been replaced several times since. The wooden bowl is now all twisted and looks like an antique from last century, actually it is!
I have always liked the TOBS Sandalwood and stays in my rotation. These days I prefer the various TOBS creams rather than the soaps, as a good face lather can be built up quickly saving several seconds.

My experience too with the cream vs. soap. Cream is way faster in preparation as well as being richer and thicker lather than the soap. I can spend several minutes on the soap trying to get it where just a few seconds with the cream goes.
I like the sandalwood fragrance. It has some layers and depth with old school appeal for me.

I've never used the TOBS soaps, just the creams. To my understanding, their soaps are not quite as good in performance as the Harris soaps, although their scents are nicer. I think I remember someone saying that TOBS has nicer creams and Harris has nicer soaps...don't quote me on it though. If you like the scent, great. Either way, TOBS is a quality soap, although for top soap performers usually Harris, Mitchells Wool Fat and Tabac are mentioned, but TOBS is still up there.

Thanked: 1195Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood (yes, in the wood bowl) was my first "luxury" soap purchase I made after I switched to a brush and soap - my first soap purchase being Proraso. Though I recall a rocky start it lathers like a champ and is as slick as anything else I own. Seems to lather up foamy at first but thickens upon application. I'm not sure I'd describe the scent as sandalwood (smells more like cinnamon to me) but it's very pleasant nonetheless.
BTW, it's a typical hard English triple milled soap. My puck is 5-1/2 years old and is still going strong...a bit dished but still lots left

I like it. It definitely covers all the bases. As a matter of fact, I have their Shave Cream and Bath Soap in Sandalwood. Good stuff....
Like most soaps, It has a break in period, IMHO. They just seem to work better after several uses.Last edited by zib; 01-16-2014 at 04:03 PM.
