Most gents have a definite preference. I have over 20 brushes, and the Shavemac brushes are the only ones with the lightbulb shape. I dearly love them. But a nicely packed Rooney (I have a Style 2 small Super) is also a great brush. I shave with both a straight razor and a DE. For me, the best part of the shave is using the brush with a quality shaving cream or shaving soap. The razor is secondary. It takes time to learn what your preference will be. It also takes a bit of investment. During the past two years, I've learned that I prefer soaps to creams. The razors are a toss up. I enjoy using a straight and everything associated with it. But I also enjoy my DE razors. It just proves that variety is the spice of life.

    Randy,

Having just acquired the SMFIII and B&B brush in both types, how does the Shavemacs compare to those for firmness?

Having never owned a a decent brush before, and being able to only compare them to my 25 yr old boar brush, I find my three new brushes while feeling very luxuriant, that they tend to spread all over my face when using them, I think floppy is the term often used. Perhaps that is what they are supposed to do, but for me they just seem a bit limp for want of a better word. I do love the longer handle of the SMFIII brush though, but for a comparison between the three of them, I find them much of a muchness. So for something a bit firmer is the Shavemacs(Saville Rows) the way to go, and what size should I be looking at in comparison to my other three?

And to get this back on thread perhaps I should try some Avocado and St James also

    Thanks
    John

I'm glad there seems to be a fan base for the St. James scent. I chose it simply because that's my middle name (minus the saintliness), and I thought it'd be like having my own personal fragrance or something [/dork].

But yeah... I was happy to receive e-mail notification today that my order has been shipped. I don't think it'll be too long now. Mua ha ha.

Blade Wielder --- this is off-topic but after seeing your posted photos (with guitar) I said to myself that's a "Justin" if I ever have seen one --- and wouldn't you know you are one.

    Later,

Justin (kind of weird how that happens)

    John,

The Shavemac and Savile Row brushes have a lot of backbone to them. None of mine could ever be considered floppy. Personally, I'm comfortable with a knot size up to 26mm. I think that with a Shavemac, a 24-25mm knot is ideal. I did not order the SMF III (wish I had!) because I felt it would be to floppy for me. I have both the B&B in Silvertip and Finest. With my brushes, the Silvertip is a bit floppy, but the Finest is quite firm. I understand (no proof, just word of mouth evidence) that the Savile Row brushes are packed a bit more densely than the Shavemac brushes. That's why I'm selling off a few of less expensive brushes...I want a new Savile Row!

    Sorry about the thread hijack!

I know I'm a bit late to this party, but just wanted to sing the praises of my far and away favorite TOBS scent...Shaving Shop. If I had to choose only one cream (and I've tried dozens...and dozens...and dozens) it would be Shaving Shop. I have not gone so far as to limit myself to this one scent (I still have and use about a dozen soaps and creams), but it is in my top tier; the pinnacle of the pyramid if you will.

As to the rest of this thread, I'm glad that I no longer feel the need to collect (or even try) additional brushes. I found the best (for me anyway, YMMV), a Simpson's Chubby 2 in Best Badger. After I bought it I slowly divested myself of all of my other brushes. None of them were being used, so why keep them.

    Cheers,
    Ed
