Thread: My face gets dry from using this shave soap.

Well what do you guys suggest than as far as shave soaps, or creams?

I like Razorock, Barrister & Mann, How to Grow a Mustache Synergy Soaps, and Catie's Bubbles. The Barrister & Mann and HTGAM Synergy soap do not dry out my face much. I also like Musgo Real lime glycerine soap as a pre shave. Razorock aftershave wax is great if you have had a rough shave but I usually use an alum block very sparingly.

Of course the alum can be drying too but you can always use any type of aftershave lotion/face lotion after using it.

There are so many. My favorites:
Cella
Mitchells Wool Fat
Stirling
Razorock

Alot of these can be had for pretty cheap, and are good performers.

Monsavon "bol à raser" if you can get it cheap, which may be hard in the US. Palmolive shaving stick is also good, so is Palmolive cream. Tabac cream and Tabac puck are good if you like the smell of the 70s.

Just shaved with Proraso White. It has a tingle from the menthol but is not a problem to me. YMMV

I have been using Noxema for a few weeks and "feel" my skin is much less dry than before using Noxema. I apply it to a wetted beard and rub it in and let whiskers absorb (adsorb?) for three or four minutes. After rinsing it off I do my normal shave routine.

I could possibly be the menthol from the Proraso shave soap I was using. I use the one with eucalyptus and menthol. Or it could be Prorasos pre shave. Im testing a few variables right now. My only question is when my face is usually burning what exactly is the culprit?

You mentioned in your original post that your face gets very dry during and after the shave...

When I first started SR shaving with Prorasso Green cream a few months ago, I read somewhere that Prorasso requires more water than most other soaps. I started re-dipping my brush in water a few extra times while face-lathering until the consistency becomes smooth an fluffy instead of sticky and pasty. The extra water made a significant difference and prevented the later from drying on my face.

As other have already stated many times, everybody has different skin sensitivities, so it might be that some ingredients just don't agree with your skin type... But I'd try adding a bit of water before giving up on Prorasso, as dry lather can also cause more irritation, and this generally considered to be a good product.

Try adding a few drops of liquid glycerine pre-lathering; try a preshave skin treatment like Proraso or Noxema; try a post-shave skin conditioner (I like the Proraso liquid after shave cream or Nivea Post Shave Balm both very nice for dry skin) or try what the Doc always says - don't do that and change soap. Also, not sure where you are located but it is winter here in NAmerica, air is dry, furnaces are blowing and that can be tough on cheeks all by itself.

In my limited three month experience, 3 things leave me with a raw red face:

1) Poor stropping= Not a clean polished edge
2) Poor lather= Too dry or too wet= No glide/Scraping dragging blade edge
3) Poor razor technique= Too much pressure on the blade and face or Blade angle is too open= Scraping the skin instead of a closer angle that slices the whiskers

Agian, I am a noob too, but I find if I get these three things correct, I have a very satisfying shave.

Am definitely a newb, but do have very sensitive skin. First soap tried, Tabac, and am going to stick with it for a while methinks. Like the old style smell too.
