Ahhh. A thread up my alley. My top 3 in order.
1. Mama bear soaps. Cheap and awesome with any scent imaginable.
2. VDH
3. Williams Puck (old time tallow)What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

Well, under $20 I'd say Tabac @ $14.95 for a puck and $19.99 in its ceramic dish. I overlooked Tabac for along time. Name wasn't particularly inspiring and it just didn't cost enough to be really good. WRONG!!
It's one of my favorites and performs with some of the best and much more expensive brands.

No contest: Provence Sante at $10 or less for a puck that will last for months, is very easy to lather, has excellent skin conditioning properties (shea butter), and is known for slickness and glide. A wonderful French soap that is hard to beat at any price.

I think I'd go with Body Shop's Maca Root cream. Lots of lathery boom for your buck there. And (on the Canadian site at least) they're clearing it out at the moment. Might be a good time to try it or stock up.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 171No sure whether I would include Proraso: personally I am not that impressed with Proraso and with the never-ending outpouring of excitement over Proraso, it hardly qualifies as "underrated" (if anything, "overrated" is more appropriate in my book).
Same applies IMO to Arko, often praised, performs o.k., but the "scent" just puts me off.
Heartily agree on Valobra semi-soft soaps and the more recently introduced hard soap is just about 50 cents over the $20 limit but certainly worth considering.
Out of my entire list, Valobra is without doubt the most traditional soap maker and is worth a try if you haven't done so already.
I consider Cella a low-cost alternative to Valobra, not quite at the same level as Valobra, but not far behind. The 150g tub falls easily within the $20 budget, the 1kg block is about $5 over the limit, but an even better bargain (don't worry about storage; neither fridge nor freezer are required, its just a soap after all).
Palmolive sticks for sure; Palmolive creams deserve a spot too and are usually easier to find.
Tabac stick and soap fall within the $20 budget, although the cream is apparently nothing to write home about.
And of course, good ole Nivea creams in either Classic, Mild, Sensitive or whatever name they may give it in your neck of the woods.
La Toja cream and stick also deserve mentioning, although I haven't used them for a while. Too much other stuff to use...

For Soap, I think it is difficult to beat the Palmolive stick and for Cream, I would say Nivea. Whilst both are inexpensive, I consider that they outperform a lot of other products, regardless of cost.
