I like Green Mountain among others. They have a few decent scents, lather well, and protect the skin for the buff pass. They are a small U.S. company and make hypoallergenic soaps also.

Heh, I am reminded of the old line about economists:
"Ask five economists and you'll get five different answers - six if one of them went to Harvard."
There is a huge personal perference aspect to soap selection - for some scent is the make it or break it aspect, for others that is secondary. One soap reviewer threw rocks at Xpec (a very good performer) and would not use it because it comes in a plastic tub and he expects a super-premium soap to come in a nice container. Another did the same for MWF because it smells like.. well, soap.
I think performance is most important for most of us. We want a rich, "cushiony" lather with lots of slickness or "glide" that does not break down and become watery. Skin conditioning might be next most important although if we use a post-shave balm that becomes moot. Ease of lathering and scent are probably next for most of us I suppose.
Fortunately, there is a huge selection of soaps and creams available so no one need sacrifice something that is important to him in order to get that great shave performance that is what matters in the end. Part of the fun of the game is trying new soaps. It's a never ending trial since we'll never be able to sample them all (although I am trying.)
