I don't think that product type is widely used around here. I think that soap or cream and a brush are pretty much the gold standard.

Why use a straight razor if not with a good soap and brush ,, that's for all those Mach 87 blade guys. Tc

tc, see the above thread, it is to do with what barbers are used to using as this will from part of a kit to be taken to the barber for them to use.

To me a decent shaving soap or cream and a decent shaving brush is the way to go, just my opinion.

I have used the Feather AC/SS system and it works very well. The training wheel blades work well enough and do have a very small protective screen on them. They are used exactly the same as a straight razor just with interchangeable blades which are about $20 for 15 blades which you can easily get 2-3 or more shaves out of.

I have never used it with a clear gel before but have shaved in field conditions with shave oil with good results so I suppose it's very much able to be done.

My only hang up with all of it is that the only person who comes close to my carotid artery with a razor blade is me! Ha.

I think you could put together the razor and blades for easily under $150 if you price shop and should be happy with your purchase.

Still would recommend you try straight/DE shaving yourself as it's not as hard as you might think and actually quite relaxing making a hobby out of something you have to do everyday anyway.

    Good luck.

I love a good soap brush and lather shaving experience myself, but I have seen barbers use simple hair styling gel and a little water with good effect on clients looking for precise beard goatee edging etc. I guess they like the clear gel because it allows them to see what they are doing with the razor edging up to the beard line. Most hair gels thinned with a little water seem to be very slippery to the touch.

Jack black beard lube. It works pretty well. I have tried shaving with just oil but it isn't the same.

Some times, there is just no time for a proper brush and soap.

I used the Lush Dirty balm and it was ok for one pass. What I found it works great as a pre-shave and apply the cream or soap over it. Wonderful for sensitive skin and the straight really glides over your face. It holds up well for 3 passes. Also the lush leaves your face hydrated and soft. No need for alum.

Haven't tried this, but if it's anything like Dr. Carver's Easy Shave Butter from DSC, it should work really well. I use Dr. Carvers whenever I am in a hurry and don't have time to prepare lather as usual.
