I've had good luck with RS - Real Shave cream. It's available at Rite Aid if you have them in your area. It's made by one of the big soapmakers in England.

Unfortunately, Rite Aid doesn't have any stores even remotely close to me.

I think everyone mentioned them already however
    Is this Bigelows/Proraso mentholated?

I grabbed a tube of the, seemingly plain variety, of the Pacific Shaving Company shave cream. My question is: do you follow the directions & basically just rub it on your face with your hand? Or do you attack it with brush & bowl??

If you have a brush feel free to use it. Bowl or face lather. Many of these OTC brands take into account that the average shaver isn't going to have a brush so those instructions are aimed at them.

I agree with the suggestion of other on Body Shop's Macca root shave cream.
Wait until it goes on sale at 50% off which is quite frequent.

The scent is quite nice, and its very slick, thick and rich

I understand that cream is made by a major brand manufacturer for body shop.

+1 on Macca root. It's earned a permanent spot in my cabinet.
