The Obie Memorial First Tier Soaps and Creams Thread.

Another soap that unfortunately goes below the radar is Acca Kappa. I've spoken about it before. It's an Italian Soap and actually the company puts out a complete line of men's and women's products. The shave soaps come in three scents. Almond, Cedar and White Moss. I haven't tried the Moss and I have the almond on order but I've been using the cedar for quite some time now. If you like cedar it's a must try soap. The scent is strong but it doesn't linger after the shave.

Performance wise it's about the same as Abbate meaning it does everything perfectly. All the qualities you want in a soap it has in spades. As a bonus it's reasonably priced.

It comes in a cheap plastic tub but it can also be had in a wood bowl made from African Wenge Wood. It can be sourced on Amazon though if you want the wood bowl Fendrihan has the best price (it ain't cheap in wood).

The only caution might be for the folks with the Hollywood Faces like Obie. In that case you might try and get a sample first.

Right you are about my Hollywood face, as some soaps and creams, many of them Italian made, torch it. I have meant to try Acca Kappa on your recommendation, however, and I will soon.

It's good to reiterate that sometimes. This thread is an invaluable source of information by a bona fide aficionado, but still one man's observations. My tier line-up would look quite different, if I would bother to keep track like you do (I am occupied with merely finding the best of the best for me, which is mainly why I don't). For starters, it would include fewer products on the whole .

I hear you. OTOH, for a clueless shaver, like me, this thread has been invaluable. I have been introduced to some soaps I never would have found on my own before I finally took a look at the OP. Many thanks Obie !

Through the years, scores of soaps and creams have come and gone from the shave den. The two permanent residents are Martin de Candre and Castle Forbes. I have used them for years, and hope to use them into the next century, and the more I use them, the more I fall in love with them. Really good stuff.

What's more, I always leave my favorite brushes — Simpson Persian Jar 3 super, Simpson Tulip 3 super, shavmac 167 silvertip and Thater 25mm finest silvertip two-band — for these two products. The best in my humble shave den might as well go on a date.

I too appreciate this thread. Welcome Dieseld, by the way. I am working my way through the tier(s). I need help deciding which one to go with next: Castle Forbes lavender, Vulfix lavender, or Alvarez Gomez. All input appreciated.

I,ll answer that one for you(my opinion only) Martin De Candre, and Castle Forbes. with these 2 soaps you will be at the top all the time and never wonder if there is better. now I do use other soaps ,, on my long journey i,ve used quite a few over the last 45 years of wet shaving.(4 years with a straight), plus I,m a brush and lather whore. I can find soaps that perform almost as good or even as well. heck my travel soap is Palmolive stick and its great. but with MDC, or CF I get everything I want in a soap and the after shave feeling and the scent. so because of this 90% of my shaves are with MDC,, hope this helps, and by the way anything in the top tier is going to be great, just different as far as scent and the hydrating abilities. Couldn't agree more...those two sit at the top for me as well...others may join their ranks, but usually only temporarily, many climb to Tier 1, but few have the staying power...Castle Forbes Lavender and MdC all the way...and can't believe I'm liking the MdC Original more than the Fougere lately.
