If you buy the stuff in the wood bowl it doesn't come with a lid so.....

I find the stuff lathers so easily if you just look at it too long you have great lather.

Because the soap is so soluble, it's easy to end up with a bunch of white stuff on your face that really isn't lather. It has a generous hydration range, but a hydration range nonetheless. Depending on your water, it needs a proper loading, and you need to work the brush to blend soap, air, and water into lather. One clue is that if the 'lather' does not easily rinse off the razor under a stream of running water, it's too dry, add more water, work the brush, and you will have a nice slick lather.

    Cheers, Steve

It's a great soap, but a wee bit demanding.
Therein lies the difference in water hardness. My water from across the pond is as hard as Chuck Norris and some soaps that are recommended by highly respected members like Obie just wont work great for me.
I find MDC ridiculously easy to lather and with just a small amount of water.

In the name of science I just did a few lathers with different ratios, with both amount of loading and water.
I tried 10,15 and 20 swirls and gradually added more water. For me just 10 swirls and little more than a damp brush works perfectly.
    YMMV.........

The Brain Bowl! I hope to be able to find one of those someday. So weird and interesting.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. It sounds like I need more water, if anything. But I still like Arko and Tabac as soaps...I guess I have pedestrian tastes. After the soaps are gone, I'll probably stick with just creams.
