    I also do both.
For me, it depends on the properties of the brush.
If it's stiff with a lot of backbone I usually get a better lather in a bowl.
Softer brushes that tend so splay out easily tend to work a lot better for face lathering for me.

After experimenting with both, most guys develop a personal preference.

I prefer face lathering, mostly because I feel it makes it easier for me to judge when I've reached the right water content (i.e. when I'm getting to the right slickness). But I still use a scuttle as well. I just sold my big scuttle and got a small one. After face lathering I leave the brush in the scuttle and it stays nice and warm for passes 2 and 3. I know, winter is here and I'm a wimp :-)

I usually bowl lather, as I find face lathering leads to more irritation for my sensitive skin. Once in a while I will still face lather, but pretty much only if it's with cream, as it takes less time (therefore causes less irritation).

And this thread is exactly the reason that the acronym YMMV is so popular around these here parts

It really doesn't matter. I bowl lather simply because I make a durn mess when face lathering.

HaHa! As Glen said, YMMV. I face lather because I make too much of a mess with a bowl. It always ends up slopping all over the place.
