Review: VHD -- deluxe Shave Soap
I was doing some shopping in downtown Toronto and came across this piece by Van Der Hagen Enterprises (Liberty Hill, TX)...
-It came in a green and white cardboard box on the outside and on the inside, it had a thin transparent plastic case that can be used as a travelling shaving bowl. A nice touch of convenience.
-The price was $3.50CDN, but since it's a low volume item, probably purchased while our dollar wasn't as strong, chances are it costs $2-3 south of the border.
-The scent is nothing special. Generic, soapy. Didn't expect anything spectacular for that price.
-It gave a thick lather fairly quickly and the lather remained moist throughout each pass, thus clearly outperforming C&E soaps
-The hair was properly hydrated and the Filly met no real resistance.
-I found the glide to be lacking and after a small nick, I paid extra attention to the blade angles, which I wouldn't have with TGQ or Tryphon soaps.
-Overall: Skip this one. In the low-end market, Williams performs at least as well (even though it may require more water to start with), smells better, is cheaper and is more readily available.
If you want to check out the manufacturer's website, it's www.vdhent.com.
P.S. The logo clearly has VHD and not VDH on the crest.Last edited by FiReSTaRT; 07-29-2007 at 08:53 PM.

Thanked: 1I kinda like the soap, but I agree with your assessment (Williams, however, does dry my face more)
Not enough fragrance (smells like some mild vitamin creme), but it does lather nicely and provides a good shave.
The soap doesn't last as long as most, from my experience.
I agree with passing, simply because it's a waste of a shave when you can lather a more fragrant soap or creme on your face.
And do NOT buy the brush, next to this soap you may see the set.
I got the bowl/brush/soap combo for someone else and witnessed what could be the worst boar brush I ever seen.Last edited by Friggin Joe; 07-30-2007 at 12:38 AM.

They also have a badger brush available, but if you don't want to spring for a good one, you can always buy a Tweezerman. Williams requires a bit more water than your average glycerine soap to work properly. Not using enough water after which the lather dries out too quickly and the subsequent loss of lubrication may be the cause of Williams drying your face. Try experimenting with water levels. I still use it from time to time for a change, but the VHD is going to end up being used as a bath (shower in my case lol) soap.

I use some of their soap, and it's not too bad. I actually had better results with it than the Williams. This soap is a pretty cheap alternative
Also, notice the large H in VHD rather than VDH- Hagen is the family name, where van der is the Germanic equivalent to "son of", akin to "Johnson".

Kinda like the "son" ending in English and Nordic languages or "vic"/"vich" in Slavic cultures. It was just weird having the order of the letters a bit scrambled lol
