70c, that's sweet!
Anybody know of any US drugstore or supermarket chains that stock the stuff?
I'm using William's hard soap presently, 99c at the local Hy-Vee.
Yeah, I'll admit it, I'm a Super-Cheapskate(tm)

Thanked: 1587I got a bunch of stuff from a member in a trade (thanks again Klaus!). Amongst other things there were two shaving sticks. I've been using the Speick one for the past few shaves, and it's excellent. I wet my face, rub the stick (of soap?) over my face, then put lather from Colleen's soap over that. Really great - I can highly recommend it.

Some of the sticks can be picked up pretty cheaply even on-line. Arko runs about $2 some places and the Palmolive ones aren't two expensive either.

Thanked: 1In Australia there are some shaving sticks sold in supermarket (Safeway) under Mennen brand.
Last time I used them they were average... in my opinion lubricity was lacking.
Keep on growin' it and shavin' it...

Here is an old shave stick holder with a Speick shave stick in it. it will fit Erasmic,Valobra also but the Arko is to big a diameter to fit.

+1 For Mama-Bear
As for "Old-Fashoned" shave sticks, I can't speak to their effectiveness. If you are looking for one from a nostalgic perspective, I haven't found or tried any. If you are asking based on a functional use, I would offer that Mama Bear's are superb.
Sue offers some scents in a stick form on her site, but she also offers the empty tubes alone. Get the regular soap in the scent of your personal preference, heat the soap in the microwave (per the instructions on her web site) and pour. Easy shave stick.
I started looking at this for upcoming travel but I wondered if the lather would be OK without a lather bowl. I received one to try and, ever since the 1st use, I put the bowls and mugs away and have been using the stick exclusively. It is simple, compact, travels well and makes a very good lather.
As mentioned, I get my face wet and rub the stick on. Take a damp brush (just a little water initially) and swirl to spread the soap evenly and build a thick (somewhat dry) lather. Add some more hot water to the brush and finish working up a soft, rich lather and you're set. The brush holds plenty of lather for 3 full passes using this technique.
Again, this is for Mama Bear's shave soaps. With others, YMMV but the concept is universal.
